New Haven State Street station is a commuter rail station located on State Street in downtown New Haven, Connecticut. The secondary railroad station in the city, it is located {{convert|0.8|mi|km}} northeast of the much larger New Haven Union Station and is intended to offer easier access to New Haven's downtown business district. It is served by CT Rail Shore Line East and Hartford Line commuter trains, Amtrak Hartford Line trains, {{amtk|Springfield}}-terminating {{lnl|Amtrak|Northeast Regional}} trains, and {{lnl|Amtrak|Valley Flyer}} trains, and a limited number of Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line trains. Originally proposed in 1996, State Street opened on June 7, 2002. A second platform opened on June 8, 2018, in time for the beginning of Hartford Line service.
Service
A station closer to New Haven's business district than Union Station was first proposed in 1996.{{cite web |url=http://worldcat.org/arcviewer/4/CZL/2013/06/13/H1371132688349/viewer/file2.htm |title=Final Report of the Task Force on Rail Service |publisher=Connecticut General Assembly Office of Legislative Research |date=February 1996 |access-date=June 26, 2016}} The station opened on June 7, 2002, for Shore Line East service, with Metro-North service added on June 24, 2002. Station design

The Northeast Corridor has four tracks at this location, in a shallow cut. From southeast to northwest, the tracks are numbered 1, 2, 4 and 6. State Street has a three-car-long high-level island platform between tracks 4 and 6, and a {{Convert|344|feet|meters}} four car-long side platform serving track 1. Track 2 is used only by trains bypassing the station.{{cite web |url=http://contextsensitivesolutions.org/content/reading/state-street-station/resources/state-street-bopklet/ |title=Context Sensitive Design in Connecticut: State Street Railroad Station in New Haven, Connecticut |publisher=Context Sensitive Solutions |work=Northeast Regional Workshop |date=November 27, 2001 |access-date=August 5, 2012}} The station originally only had the island platform when it opened; the side platform was built for the 2018 opening of the Hartford Line.{{cite web |url=http://www.iridetheharlemline.com/2011/10/18/tuesday-tour-of-the-new-haven-line-state-street/ |title=Tuesday Tour of the New Haven Line: State Street |author=Emily |work=I Ride the Harlem Line |date=October 18, 2011 |access-date=August 5, 2012}}{{cite web |url=http://www.nhhsrail.com/pdfs/ea/volii_1_03.pdf |title=Station and Layover Site Concept Plans |work=New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Environmental Assessment |author=CDM Smith |publisher=Connecticut Department of Transportation |date=February 24, 2012 |access-date=April 3, 2013}} Because the side platform was not part of the original station, the two platforms are not directly connected and are accessed separately, with two pedestrian bridges, staircases and elevators connecting the platforms to the street-level entrance and busway.
Construction on the second platform began in July 2016, using $10 million in federal funding from a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant.{{cite news |title=New Haven State Street Station to get 2nd platform through federal grant |url=http://www.nhregister.com/government-and-politics/20130903/new-haven-state-street-station-to-get-2nd-platform-through-federal-grant |newspaper=New Haven Register |date=September 3, 2013 |access-date=September 7, 2013}}{{cite journal |url=http://nhhsrail.com/pdfs/newsletter%20final%20fall%202016.pdf |title=Construction Progresses at Hartford Line Stations |journal=New Haven - Hartford - Springfield Rail Program Newsletter |date=Fall 2016 |page=2 |publisher=Connecticut Department of Transportation}} The second platform was originally expected to be complete by the end of 2017.{{cite magazine |magazine=New Haven-Hartford Springfield Rail Program Newsletter |date=Summer 2017 |publisher=Connecticut Department of Transportation |title=From the Commissioner |page=1 |url=http://nhhsrail.com/pdfs/nhhs%20rail%20program%20summer%202017%20newsletter%20final.pdf}} The construction of the second platform was paired with security improvements, LED walkway and platform lighting, a sheltered bicycle parking area, platform snow melters, and real-time train information displays.{{cite web|url=http://nhhsrail.com/pdfs/state%20street%20station%20final%20presentation%20july%202015.pdf|title=State Street Station – Public Information Meeting|date=July 22, 2015|publisher=Connecticut Department of Transportation|access-date=August 11, 2015}} The platform opened on June 8, 2018.{{Cite web|url=http://www.nhhsrail.com/info_center/improvements_map.aspx|title=New Haven - Hartford - Springfield Rail Program: Stay Informed|website=www.nhhsrail.com|publisher=Connecticut Department of Transportation|access-date=October 29, 2018}}
