Architecture

The New India Assurance building's design has been described as Indo-Deco, an architecture style that combines Indian design elements with Art Deco.{{Cite web |title=Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai |url=https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1480/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240727021421/https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1480/ |archive-date=27 July 2024 |access-date=4 August 2024 |website=UNESCO}} The building's architectural style combines modern art deco features with a modified classicism, evidenced in the strong vertical ribs of the façade that give the building a monumental appearance, making it seem larger than it is in reality.

The entrance is flanked by bas-reliefs featuring women in saris and men in traditional dhoti and turbans, working in fields and in factories.{{Cite web |date=20 December 2019 |title=Swadeshi Moderne: Aesthetics, Politics & Appropriation in Bombay's Deco |url=https://www.artdecomumbai.com/research/swadeshi-moderne-aesthetics-politics-and-appropriation-in-bombays-deco/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231128223731/https://www.artdecomumbai.com/research/swadeshi-moderne-aesthetics-politics-and-appropriation-in-bombays-deco/ |archive-date=28 November 2023 |access-date=4 August 2024 |website=Art Deco Mumbai}}{{Cite web |date=31 July 2015 |title=Art Deco-ded: Explore south Mumbai's timeless architecture |url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/art-and-culture/art-deco-ded-explore-south-mumbai-s-timeless-architecture/story-CiANVvBhFHOpP5FW6PbuNK.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220817165711/https://www.hindustantimes.com/art-and-culture/art-deco-ded-explore-south-mumbai-s-timeless-architecture/story-CiANVvBhFHOpP5FW6PbuNK.html |archive-date=17 August 2022 |access-date=4 August 2024 |website=Hindustan Times}}

Included in the design was a modern forced air-cooling system with centralized duct work. Projecting surfaces on the eastern and western sides protect windows from the sun. To deal with potential power failures, the windows were constructed to open and close.{{cite book|last=Lang|first=Jon T.|title=A concise history of modern architecture in India|publisher=Orient Blackswan|date=2002|pages=16|isbn=81-7824-017-3|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=gxyGbhlKQXQC&q=New+India+Assurance+Building&pg=PA16|access-date=2009-04-25}}
