Nicholas Stephen Jakubovics (born 1973) is a British dental researcher and academic who is a professor of oral microbiology at the School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University.{{cite web | title=Staff Profile - Centre for Synthetic Biology and the Bioeconomy | website=Newcastle University | date=23 August 2017 | url=https://www.ncl.ac.uk/csbb/people/profile/nickjakubovics.html | access-date=7 April 2022}} He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dental Research.{{cite web | title=Nicholas Jakubovics Named Journal of Dental Research Editor-in-Chief - International Association of Dental Research | website=IADR | date=1 April 2020 | url=https://www.iadr.org/about/news-reports/press-releases/nicholas-jakubovics-named-journal-dental-research-editor-chief | access-date=8 April 2022}} His research concentrates on microbial adhesion, colonisation and cell-cell interactions, primarily in dental plaque.
Career
Jakubovics studied biochemistry at Girton College, Cambridge before completing a doctorate at Warwick University under the supervision of Crawford S. Dow.{{cite thesis |last=Jakubovics |first=Nicholas S.|date=1998 |title=Biofilms in the potable water distribution network |type=PhD |publisher=University of Warwick |docket= |oclc=53604998 |url=https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?did=1&uin=uk.bl.ethos.343836 |access-date=8 April 2022}} He subsequently worked with Howard Jenkinson at Bristol Dental School investigating the adhesion, colonisation and sensing mechanisms of oral streptococci. In 2004, Jakubovics obtained a NIH Post-Doctoral Fellowship to work with Paul Kolenbrander at the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, Maryland, on cell-cell interactions in oral biofilms. He joined Newcastle Dental School as Lecturer in Oral Microbiology in 2007 and was promoted to Professor in 2022. His research employs techniques from molecular genetics to understand how oral biofilms form and to investigate the impact of different treatments. Jakubovics co-authored a 2019 paper finding that early-stage bacterial growth was slowed by the use of rose petal-like hierarchical surfaces.{{Cite journal |last1=Cao |first1=Yunyi |last2=Jana |first2=Saikat |last3=Bowen |first3=Leon |last4=Tan |first4=Xiaolong |last5=Liu |first5=Hongzhong |last6=Rostami |first6=Nadia |last7=Brown |first7=James |last8=Jakubovics |first8=Nicholas S. |last9=Chen |first9=Jinju |date=12 November 2019 |title=Hierarchical Rose Petal Surfaces Delay the Early-Stage Bacterial Biofilm Growth |url=https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.langmuir.9b02367 |journal=Langmuir |language=en |volume=35 |issue=45 |pages=14670–14680 |doi=10.1021/acs.langmuir.9b02367 |pmid=31630525 |s2cid=204815320 |issn=0743-7463}} He also studies biofilms elsewhere in the human body, including prosthetic joint, middle ear, and sinus infections.{{cite web | title=A solution to sinusitis from the sea | website=(e) Science News | date=18 February 2013 | url=http://esciencenews.com/articles/2013/02/18/a.solution.sinusitis.sea | access-date=8 April 2022}}
Jakubovics, Alexander H. Rickard, Derek Samarian, and Ethan Kolderman jointly hold a patent for the use of L-arginine to remove dental plaque.{{Cite web |title=US Patent Application for COMPOSITIONS AND METHOD FOR DESTABILIZING, ALTERING, AND DISPERSING BIOFILMS Patent Application (Application #20160235698 issued August 18, 2016)|url=https://patents.justia.com/patent/20160235698 |access-date=25 May 2022 |website=patents.justia.com}}
Jakubovics has been editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dental Research since April 2020.
Personal life
Jakubovics has represented Bristol in the Four Nations Chess League.{{cite web | title=Nicholas Jakubovics chess games | website=365Chess.com | url=https://www.365chess.com/players/Nicholas_Jakubovics | access-date=2022-04-08}} He has two children and lives in Northumberland.
