AFL career
=Fitzroy=
Carter was drafted by Fitzroy Football Club with the 20th selection in the 1995 AFL draft, with coach Michael Nunan stating the club was looking for "players with pace and finish to play in the midfield". Carter had an impressive first AFL season, debuting in round 6{{cite news|last=Reilly|first=Stephen|title=Fitzroy v Richmond|url=http://newsstore.fairfax.com.au/apps/viewDocument.ac?multiview=true&sy=age&page=1&kw=Nick+Carter+and+Fitzroy&pb=all_ffx&dt=selectRange&dr=entire&so=relevance&sf=article&rc=10&rm=200&sp=nrm&clsPage=1&hids=&sids=news960502_0195_8228|accessdate=12 November 2010|newspaper=The Age|date=2 May 1996}} and remaining in the senior team for the rest of the season, playing 17 matches.{{cite news|last=Hinds|first=Richard|title=How your team shapes up: 16th – Fitzroy|url=http://newsstore.fairfax.com.au/apps/viewDocument.ac?multiview=true&sy=age&page=1&kw=Nick+Carter+and+Fitzroy&pb=all_ffx&dt=selectRange&dr=entire&so=relevance&sf=article&rc=10&rm=200&sp=nrm&clsPage=1&hids=&sids=news961005_0041_1285|accessdate=12 November 2010|newspaper=The Age|date=5 October 1996}} He was nominated for the 1996 AFL Rising Star award in round 8.{{cite web|title=Rising Stars|url=http://www.lions.com.au/Club/history/brisbane-lions-history/rising-stars|publisher=Brisbane Lions|accessdate=4 September 2014}} Despite a good season personally, Fitzroy struggled both on the field, winning only one match for the whole season, and financially. Fitzroy's administrator at the time negotiated a deal with Brisbane Bears whereby at the end of the 1996 season, Fitzroy's AFL operations were taken over by the Bears, to form the Brisbane Lions.{{cite web|title=100 Years of Fitzroy|url=http://www.lions.com.au/fitzroy%20lions/tabid/5170/default.aspx|publisher=Brisbane Lions|accessdate=12 November 2010}}
