Stilo began following Chet Baker in 1979, attending his concerts and recording sessions.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=278}} Baker took him as part of his band for a tour of Italy the following year,{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=279}} and on subsequent tours,{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=313}} including to Brazil in 1985.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=320}} After the last, Stilo stayed in Brazil for around a year before reuniting with Baker.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|pp=324–325}} Despite discouragement from Baker, who was a long-term drug addict, Stilo by this time had become addicted to heroin.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|pp=324–325}} Back together in Europe, Stilo commented: "Maybe I made the choice just to live the same life he was doing, you know? [...] We were like brothers, maybe sometimes fighting, but really taking care of each other."{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=338}} They continued to play together, with Stilo on flute and guitar.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=338}} Stilo wrote the music for Baker's 1988 album Chet on Poetry; it "ranged from slick Europop to funk to a graceful jazz waltz".{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=351}} He also played on the album.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=351}} He appeared on film in the 1988 documentary Let's Get Lost.{{cite web |last= |first= |date= |title=Let's Get Lost (1988) |publisher= |url=https://www.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b79b251d5 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003124118/http://www.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b79b251d5 |url-status=dead |archive-date=October 3, 2018 |website=bfi.org |access-date=4 December 2018}} After Baker's death later that year, Stilo gave up heroin.{{sfn|Gavin|2002|p=377}}
