The Nicolet Conference was founded in 1938 by four small schools in Marinette County and Oconto County in northeastern Wisconsin: Amberg, Mountain, Pembine and Wausaukee.{{Cite news |date=29 September 1938 |title=Nicolet Conference Prepares for Season |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/207680224/?match=1&terms=%22nicolet%20conference%22 |access-date=22 February 2025 |work=Green Bay Press-Gazette |pages=19}} The conference was named after Jean Nicolet, the French fur trader who explored Wisconsin's waterways in pre-colonial North America. Competition lasted for only four seasons before World War II interrupted and the conference was disbanded in 1942. Three years later, three former members of the Nicolet Conference (Amberg, Pembine and Wausaukee) would join with Crivitz of the Marinette & Oconto Conference to form the Granite Valley Conference.{{Cite news |date=20 November 1954 |title=First Tilt in New Loop To Be Played Tonight |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/188824722/?match=1&terms=%22granite%20valley%20conference%22 |access-date=21 February 2025 |work=Green Bay Press-Gazette |pages=14}}{{clear}}
