Nidogen-1 (NID-1), formerly known as entactin, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NID1 gene.{{cite journal | vauthors = Olsen DR, Nagayoshi T, Fazio M, Mattei MG, Passage E, Weil D, Timpl R, Chu ML, Uitto J | title = Human nidogen: cDNA cloning, cellular expression, and mapping of the gene to chromosome Iq43 | journal = Am. Function
Nidogen-1 is a member of the nidogen family of basement membrane glycoproteins. The protein interacts with several other components of basement membranes. Structurally it (along with perlecan) connects the networks formed by collagens and laminins to each other.{{cite journal | vauthors = Yurchenco PD, Patton BL | title = Developmental and pathogenic mechanisms of basement membrane assembly | journal = Curr. Pharm. Des. | volume = 15 | issue = 12 | pages = 1277–94 | year = 2009 | pmid = 19355968 | pmc = 2978668 | doi = 10.2174/138161209787846766}} It may also play a role in cell interactions with the extracellular matrix.{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: NID1 nidogen 1| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=4811}}{{cite journal | vauthors = Yi XY, Wayner EA, Kim Y, Fish AJ | title = Adhesion of cultured human kidney mesangial cells to native entactin: role of integrin receptors | journal = Cell Adhes. Clinical significance
Mutations in NID1 cause autosomal dominant Dandy–Walker malformation with occipital encephalocele (ADDWOC).{{Cite web|url=https://www.omim.org/entry/609222|title=OMIM Entry - % 609222 - DANDY-WALKER MALFORMATION WITH OCCIPITAL CEPHALOCELE, AUTOSOMAL DOMINANT; ADDWOC|website=www.omim.org|access-date=2020-01-06}}{{Cite journal|last1=McNiven|first1=Vanda|last2=Ito|first2=Yoko A.|last3=Hartley|first3=Taila|last4=Kernohan|first4=Kristin|last5=Miller|first5=Elka|last6=Care4Rare Canada|last7=Armour|first7=Christine M.|date=May 2019|title=NID1 variant associated with occipital cephaloceles in a family expressing a spectrum of phenotypes|journal=American Journal of Medical Genetics.
