{{Update|date=November 2023}}
A night latch (or night-latch or nightlatch) is a lock that is fitted on the surface of a door; it is operated from the exterior side of the door by a key and from the interior (i.e. "secure") side of the door by a knob.{{cite web |url=https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/night+latch |title=Definition of NIGHT LATCH|website=www.merriam-webster.com}}{{cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=oR0nAgAAQBAJ&dq=night-latch&pg=PA293 |title=The Handyman's Guide: Essential Woodworking Tools and Techniques |first=Paul N. |last=Hasluck|year=2011|publisher=Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.|via=Google Books|isbn=9781626366589}}{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=EFnZAAAAMAAJ&q=night-latch|title=Life|first=John Ames|last=Mitchell|year=2018|publisher=Life|via=Google Books}}
Overview
Night latches are usually rim locks{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=WL1ECQAAQBAJ&dq=night-latch+lock&pg=PA39|title=Court Security: A Guide for Post 9-11 Environments|first=Tony L.|last=Jones|year= 2003|publisher=Charles C Thomas Publisher|via=Google Books|isbn=9780398084356}} and are available as deadlocking (automatically locks once shut) and non-deadlocking versions.
Historically, such locks were intended for use at night-time, hence the name.{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NcU3kyrInnwC&dq=night-latch&pg=PA750|title=Sturgis' Illustrated Dictionary of Architecture and Building: An Unabridged Reprint of the 1901–2 Edition|first1=Russell|last1=Sturgis|first2=Francis A.|last2=Davis|date=23 April 2013|publisher=Courier Corporation|via=Google Books|isbn=9780486145921}} The keyless egress that they offer is a valuable fire safety measure, but may be a security risk if breaking a glass panel (usually in the door) or a nearby small window allows an intruder to reach the knob inside and open the door from the outside.
