Nintendo Video{{efn|In Japanese as {{Nihongo|Nintendo Video|ニンテンドービデオ|Nintendō Bideo|lead=yes}}}} was a video on demand service for the Nintendo 3DS which streamed hand-pickedeShop news 3D and 2D video content from CollegeHumor, Aardman Animations, Blue Man Group, Channel Frederator Network, Mondo Media and other studios.

History

Previously, the service was available as a separate app that utilized SpotPass, downloading videos to the console's SD card via Wi-Fi Internet access for offline viewing. New content could be automatically downloaded via SpotPass, replacing the old content. The dedicated Nintendo Video app launched in Australia, Europe, and Japan on July 13, 2011, with initial videos including Oscar's Oasis and Magic Tricks for the Nintendo 3DS.{{cite web|url=http://www.vooks.net/story-20286-Nintendo-Video-Channel-for-Nintendo-3DS-goes-live-in-Europe-and-Australia-.html|title=Nintendo Video Channel for Nintendo 3DS goes live in Europe and Australia|author=Daniel Vuckovic|date=14 July 2011|publisher=Vooks.net|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110715075650/http://www.vooks.net/story-20286-Nintendo-Video-Channel-for-Nintendo-3DS-goes-live-in-Europe-and-Australia-.html|archive-date=15 July 2011|access-date=14 July 2011}}{{cite web|url=https://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2011/download_nintendo_video_for_nintendo_3ds_43881.html|title=Download the free Nintendo Video application, only for Nintendo 3DS|date=11 July 2011|publisher=Nintendo|access-date=14 July 2011|archive-date=3 November 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211103085711/https://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2011/Download-the-free-Nintendo-Video-application-only-for-Nintendo-3DS-252872.html|url-status=live}} The app became available in North America a few days later on July 21, 2011.{{cite news|url=http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27244|title=Nintendo Video Goes Live in North America|last=Kaluska|first=Aaron|date=July 21, 2011|publisher=Nintendo World Report|access-date=September 24, 2012|archive-date=July 24, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120724233353/http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27244|url-status=live}}

In 2012, Nintendo created a joint venture for Nintendo Video Original Series and distributed their first Original Series for Nintendo Video, Threediots.{{cite web|url=http://www.destructoid.com/e3-threediots-is-the-killer-app-the-3ds-has-been-needing-229053.phtml|title=E3: Threediots is the killer app the 3DS has been needing — Destructoid|work=Destructoid|date=7 June 2012|access-date=9 August 2013|archive-date=3 May 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130503003031/http://www.destructoid.com/e3-threediots-is-the-killer-app-the-3ds-has-been-needing-229053.phtml|url-status=live}}

Since June 29, 2015, the app is no longer functional and videos can no longer be downloaded. In the following month, the Nintendo eShop offered most of the videos for streaming on demand, with a total of 164 videos available. The previously hosted Nintendo Video content alongside other video on demand content under the Nintendo Video category remained on the Nintendo eShop until its closure on March 27, 2023.

Videos would commonly make returns due to popularity or stay longer due to positive fan reception.

The remaining Nintendo Video content and other video on demand content under the Nintendo Video category became permanently unavailable for download when the Nintendo eShop closed on March 27, 2023. Despite the closure, these can still be redownloaded, however, provided that the user has downloaded the content prior to the shop's closure. Most of the content initially released for the service have also been distributed through other means over time, such as being officially uploaded online or included in home media releases, albeit without the stereoscopic 3D effect for the most part.
