Early life
Ganatra was born on 30 June 1967 in Kenya. Both sides of his family have origins in Gujarat, India, which was explored on-screen in the 2013 series of Who Do You Think You Are?{{cite web|access-date=2014-01-18|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b039tygt|title=BBC One - Who Do You Think You Are?, Series 10, Nitin Ganatra}} His great-grandfather arrived in Kenya in the late 1890s, as one of 32,000 contracted labourers to build the Uganda Railway. One of under 10,000 to stay in the country after the railway's completion, his grandfather and his father later joined the family's general trading business.
After Kenya gained independence from the United Kingdom and forced the native Indian population to choose between Kenya and their British passports in 1971, Ganatra, aged 3, moved with his family to Coventry, where the family still owned a corner shop.{{Cite web|url=https://www.radiotimes.com/|title=Home|website=Radio Times}}{{cite web|url=http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/local-news/eastenders-stars-grandmother-married-age-5782917|title=Eastenders star's grandmother was married at the age of six|first=Roz|last=Laws|date=25 August 2013}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/featuredarticles/wdytya2013_ganatra.php|title=Featured Articles: TheGenealogist|website=www.thegenealogist.co.uk}}
