History

The academy was founded in 1970, as the successor of the "Association for Research of North-Rhine-Westphalia", which was initiated by the former Prime Minister Karl Arnold in 1950. In 1970 it was renamed to the "Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences". From 1993 until 2008 it was called "North-Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences".{{Cite web |title=North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts |url=https://www.akademienunion.de/en/acadamy/awk-nrw |access-date=2025-01-17 |website=www.akademienunion.de}}{{Cite web |date=2024-05-14 |title=North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts Welcomes Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel as a New Member » Lamarr News |url=https://lamarr-institute.org/news/north-rhine-westphalian-academy-of-sciences-humanities-and-the-arts-welcomes-prof-dr-stefan-wrobel-as-a-new-member/ |access-date=2025-01-17 |language=en-US}}

Purpose

The aim and purpose of this consolidation of the natural and technical sciences was to scientifically advise the government of North-Rhine-Westphalia during the post-war reconstruction. The construction of the Karl-Arnold-House in Düsseldorf in 1960 gave the association its own building in which it could fulfil its tasks.

Members

The academy has around 280 full members and almost 130 corresponding members who foster scientific dialog and exchange with research and cultural institutions in Germany and abroad.{{Cite web |last=Design |first=Universität Münster, University of Münster, Web and |date=2022-05-12 |title=NEWSMUSTER |url=https://www.uni-muenster.de/news/view.php?cmdid=12565&lang=en |access-date=2025-01-17 |website=www.uni-muenster.de |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=NRW Academy Welcomes Two New Members from the University of Bonn |url=https://www.uni-bonn.de/en/news/nrw-academy-welcomes-two-new-members-from-the-university-of-bonn-1 |access-date=2025-01-17 |website=Universität Bonn |language=en}}
