Northern Liech was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020.{{cite news |last1=Mutambo |first1=Aggrey |title=S. Sudan govt agrees to reduce states to 10 to maintain peace |url=https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/news/ea/South-Sudan-number-of-states/4552908-5456652-146yscpz/index.html |accessdate=February 15, 2020 |agency=The East African}} It was located in the Greater Upper Nile region and it bordered Ruweng to the north, Western Bieh to the east, Southern Liech to the south, Tonj to the south, and Gogrial and Twic to the west.

History

On 2 October 2015, President Salva Kiir issued a decree establishing 28 states in place of the 10 constitutionally established states.{{cite news|url=https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/kiir-and-makuei-want-28-states-s-sudan|title=Kiir and Makuei want 28 states in South Sudan|publisher=Radio Tamazuj|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208183221/https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/kiir-and-makuei-want-28-states-s-sudan|archivedate=2015-12-08}} The decree established the new states largely along ethnic lines. A number of opposition parties and civil society groups challenged the constitutionality of the decree.
