Nosmips aenigmaticus is a rare fossil primate known only from 12 teeth. Most teeth were found at a site in the Fayum Depression about {{convert|40|mi|km|abbr=}} outside Cairo, Egypt.[http://www.physorg.com/news192736436.html Odd mosaic of dental features reveals undocumented primate]
Nosmips aenigmaticus probably lived 37 million years ago in Africa and has not been successfully classified within any group of primates.Yahia, M. 2010. [http://www.nature.com/nmiddleeast/2010/100603/full/nmiddleeast.2010.159.html A new evolutionary mystery]. Nature. In particular, it is distinct from the three main branches of primate found in Africa at the time - anthropoids, adapiforms and lemuriforms. It is weakly associated with the Eosimiidae. Its premolars are specialised and the tooth enamel displays extensive signs of pitting, which would appear to be consistent with a diet of either seeds or fruits with hard pits.{{Cite journal|last1=Seiffert|first1=Erik R.|last2=Boyer|first2=Doug M.|last3=Fleagle|first3=John G.|last4=Gunnell|first4=Gregg F.|last5=Heesy|first5=Christopher P.|last6=Perry|first6=Jonathan M.
