In information technology, a notification system is a combination of software and hardware that delivers a message to a set of recipients.{{cite web | url = http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-notification-system.htm | title = What Is a Notification System? | publisher = wiseGEEK | accessdate = 2016-02-24}} It commonly displays activity related to an account.{{cite web | url = http://feedly.readthedocs.org/en/latest/notification_systems.html | title = Tutorial: building a notification feed | publisher = Stream Framework (previously Feedly) | accessdate = 2016-02-24}} These systems are an important aspect of modern web applications.{{cite web | url = http://culttt.com/ | title = Modelling a Notification System in PHP | author = Philip Brown | date = 2015-01-19 | publisher = Culttt | archiveurl = http://culttt.com/2015/01/19/modelling-notification-system-php/ | archivedate = 2015-01-19 | accessdate = 2016-02-24 }}

Implications and effects

The widespread adoption of notification systems was a major technological development of the 20th century.{{Cite journal |last=Pattit |first=Jason M. |last2=Raj |first2=S. P. |last3=Wilemon |first3=David |date=2012-03-01 |title=An institutional theory investigation of U.S. technology development trends since the mid-19th century |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048733311002034 |journal=Research Policy |volume=41 |issue=2 |pages=306–318 |doi=10.1016/j.respol.2011.10.008 |issn=0048-7333}} A notification is a combination of software, hardware, and psychology that provides a means of delivering a message to a group of recipients. Notifications show activity that relates to an event, account, or person.

A push notification is a message that appears on a mobile device such as a text, sports score, limited-time deal, or an e-mail announcing when a computer network will be down for scheduled maintenance. Notifications are sent from app publishers at any time in an effort to get users to open up their app or website. Notifications appear on a user's lock screen and also at the top of their phone screen when the phone is unlocked and in use. In most newer devices, notifications appearing on the lock screen can be turned off, typically via an option in the device's settings.{{Cite web |title=Control notifications on Android - Android Help |url=https://support.google.com/android/answer/9079661?hl=en#zippy=,option-dont-show-any-notifications |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20250312165156/https://support.google.com/android/answer/9079661?hl=en |archive-date=2025-03-12 |access-date=2025-03-26 |website=support.google.com |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad |url=https://support.apple.com/en-us/108781 |access-date=2025-03-26 |website=Apple Support |language=en}}

Push notifications can be valuable and convenient for both the app user and the developer due to the immediacy and display location of notifications. Notifications also pair with sounds to reach multiple senses of a user and reach maximum attention.

For app publishers, push notifications are a way for them to speak directly to the user without being caught by spam filters or being pushed to the side by the flood of emails within an inbox. Because of this, these push click-through rates can be higher than email.{{Cite journal |last=Liu |first=Zhuping |last2=Yang |first2=Bicheng |last3=Kumar |first3=Subodha |date=February 10, 2024 |title=Campaigns that Click: Unleashing the Power of Push-Notification Advertising on Mobile Apps |url=https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4732248 |journal=Fox School of Business Research Paper |via=SSRN}} They invite users to open an app or spend time and money in a certain way by the app publisher, even when the app isn't open. This means that for developers, publishers, and businesses, notifications are the most effective way to take attention and ultimately make money.

Psychology and ethics

Notifications use a concept known as variable rewards,{{Cite journal |last=Bhargava |first=Vikram R. |last2=Velasquez |first2=Manuel |date=July 2021 |title=Ethics of the Attention Economy: The Problem of Social Media Addiction |url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/business-ethics-quarterly/article/ethics-of-the-attention-economy-the-problem-of-social-media-addiction/1CC67609A12E9A912BB8A291FDFFE799 |journal=Business Ethics Quarterly |language=en |volume=31 |issue=3 |pages=321–359 |doi=10.1017/beq.2020.32 |issn=1052-150X|doi-access=free }} which is a technique that slot machines use to engage gamblers. Similarly, variable reward systems keep users compulsively checking their phones due to the possibility of social approval awaiting them.

Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt at NYU Stern School of Business points to concerns of mental health directly relating to social media and the notification system. He points to the increase in depression and suicide rates among teens and young adults since the early 2000s, and Haidt states that this trend started the year social media was made available on cell phones.{{Cite web |last=Payton |first=Claire |date=2024-11-26 |title=Does Social Media Have an Impact on Youth Mental Health? |url=https://tyde.virginia.edu/mental-health-and-social-media/ |access-date=2025-03-25 |website=TYDE |language=en-US}}

Tristan Harris, former design ethicist at Google and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology states that there is a "disinformation-for-profit business model" and companies profit by allowing "unregulated messages to reach anyone for the best price."{{Cite web |last=admin@atlantislearning.net |date=2022-08-11 |title=The Social Dilemma Transcript - Main Arguments - Atlantis School |url=https://atlantislearning.net/communications-foundations/history-of-communication/the-social-dilemma-transcript-main-arguments/ |access-date=2025-03-25 |website=Atlantis Learning Network |language=en-US}} This becomes problematic as companies have unlimited and often unwarranted access to you and your focus through the notification system. This is always used to drive larger profits, whether that means that companies use notifications to simply promote their newest product, or if they subtly try to get you back onto the app in order to take more of your time. There is overwhelming evidence that notifications are associated with decreased productivity, poorer concentration, and increased distraction at work, school, and home.{{Cite journal |last=Kaminske |first=Althea |last2=Brown |first2=Adam |last3=Aylward |first3=Anna |last4=Haller |first4=Mckenzie |date=2022-07-15 |title=Cell Phone Notifications Harm Attention: An Exploration of the Factors that Contribute to Distraction |url=https://www.eu-jer.com/cell-phone-notifications-harm-attention-an-exploration-of-the-factors-that-contribute-to-distraction |journal=European Journal of Educational Research |language=english |volume=11 |issue=3 |pages=1487–1494 |doi=10.12973/eu-jer.11.3.1487 |issn=2165-8714|doi-access=free }}{{Cite web |title=Constant Distraction And Stress, App Notifications Affect Minds Negatively: Study |url=https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/constant-distraction-and-stress-app-notifications-affect-minds-negatively-study-3595177 |access-date=2025-03-25 |website=www.ndtv.com |language=en}}

Interactive media

The number of ways a person can interact with technology has steadily increased. Advanced notification systems support at least one and sometimes all of the following communications media:
