History
This storied series began in 1909,{{Cite news|url=http://www.winsipedia.com/pittsburgh/vs/notre-dame|title=Winsipedia – Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish football series history|newspaper=Winsipedia|access-date=February 12, 2017|language=en}}{{cite web |title=Notre Dame – Pitt Football Rivalry History |url=https://www.uhnd.com/history/rivalries/notre-dame-pitt-rivalry-history-25060/ |website=UHND.com – Notre Dame Football, Basketball, & Recruiting}} and there have been no more than two consecutive seasons without two teams meeting each other except from 1913 to 1929, 1938 to 1942, and 1979 to 1981. Since 1982, the Panthers and Irish have remained a relative fixture on each other's schedules.
The series has featured several memorable games. In 1975, Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett rushed for a school-record 303 yards in a 34–20 victory at Pitt Stadium, still the most yards ever by an Irish opponent.{{Cite web|url=https://archive.triblive.com/ccpa/?page=/sports/college/pitt/pitt-star-dorsett-recalls-303-yard-performance-against-notre-dame/|title=/ccpa/|website=TribLIVE.com}} The following year, he rushed for 181 yards on 22 carries in a 31–10 victory as No. 9 Pitt defeated No. 11 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, en route to an undefeated season and a national championship.{{cite news |last1=Huston 9.13.19 |first1=Chris |title=This Week in Heisman History: Tony Dorsett rips Notre Dame...again |url=https://www.heisman.com/articles/this-week-in-heisman-history-tony-dorsett-rips-notre-dame-again/ |website=Heisman}}
In 2012, Notre Dame's Everett Golson sparked a comeback from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime, and the Irish survived a narrowly-missed game-winning field goal attempt by the Panthers in the second OT, to pull out a 29–26 victory in triple OT at home to stay unbeaten en route to a perfect 12–0 regular season.{{cite web |title=Notre Dame rallies past Pittsburgh in three overtimes |url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2012/11/03/notre-dame-rally-pittsburgh-triple-overtime/1679637/ |website=USA TODAY}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/2012/11/04/notre-dames-kelly-uncalled-penalty-on-missed-pitt-fg-bad-coaching/|title=Notre Dame's Kelly: Uncalled penalty on missed Pitt FG 'bad coaching'|newspaper=tribunedigital-chicagotribune|access-date=February 12, 2017|language=en}} The longest game in Notre Dame history occurred between the two schools in 2008, when Pitt defeated ND 36–33 in four overtimes at Notre Dame after the game was delayed briefly in the first overtime by the sprinklers in one end zone suddenly going off.{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/02/sports/ncaafootball/02east.html|title=Needing Four Overtimes, Pittsburgh Escapes Notre Dame|last=The Associated Press|date=November 1, 2008|newspaper=The New York Times|access-date=February 12, 2017|issn=0362-4331}}{{cite web |last1=Writer |first1=TOM COYNEAP Sports |title=Once again, ND's football team can't finish off an opponent |url=https://www.nwitimes.com/sports/college/once-again-nd-s-football-team-can-t-finish-off/article_43407b9c-a542-5269-b08d-190210900dd5.html |website=nwitimes.com |date=November 5, 2008 |language=en}}{{cite web |title=Notre Dame at Pittsburgh: Who, what, when, where, why & by how much? |url=https://irish.nbcsports.com/2020/10/24/no-3-notre-dame-at-pittsburgh-who-what-when-where-why-and-by-how-much/ |website=Inside the Irish {{!}} NBC Sports |date=October 24, 2020}} The most recent game was a 45–3 Irish win on October 24, 2020, at Pittsburgh.{{Cite web |url=http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/sched/nd-m-footbl-sched.html |title=Notre Dame Football Official Schedule :: Notre Dame Football :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics |access-date=March 27, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150905055203/http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/sched/nd-m-footbl-sched.html |archive-date=September 5, 2015 |url-status=dead }}
