Etymology

The name is derived from the creek Bělá, which flows through the area.{{Cite web |title=Základní údaje — Čeština |url=https://starabela.ostrava.cz/cs/o-stare-bele/zakladni-udaje/ |access-date=2025-07-07 |website=starabela.ostrava.cz}} The word bělá comes from the Czech adjective bílý, meaning white – hence, the name refers to a 'white creek'.{{Cite web |title=Tomášův Internet - Proti proudu Bělé od soutoku k prameni |url=https://www.pohodar.com/vandr/bela/index.htm |access-date=2025-07-07 |website=www.pohodar.com}} The adjective nová (feminine form of nový), which means new, was added to distinguish the municipality from its older neighbor, Stará Bělá.{{Cite web |title=Památky obce Stará Bělá, politický okres Moravská Ostrava |url=https://www.soupispamatek.com/okres_moravskaostrava/foto/starabela/starabela.htm |access-date=2025-07-07 |website=www.soupispamatek.com}}{{Cite web |date=2025-04-12 |title=Z Nové Bělé do Mitrovic – ostravskepesiny.cz |url=https://www.ostravskepesiny.cz/trasy-prohlidek/prohlidky-mapujici-jednotlive-ostravske-ctvrti/z-nove-bele-do-mitrovic/ |access-date=2025-07-07 |language=cs}}
