Olfactory receptor 5W2 is a protein in humans that is encoded by the OR5W2 gene.{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: OR5W2 olfactory receptor, family 5, subfamily W, member 2| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=390148}}
Function
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. The olfactory receptor proteins are members of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for the recognition and G-protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature assigned to the olfactory receptor genes and proteins in humans is independent of other organisms.
