Corruption and demolition order
Hainan politician Zhang Qi, who was later convicted of corruption, approved land reclamation for the island in conflict with environmental protection laws. The construction of the island caused damages to coral reefs and oyster populations. The boundaries of the environmental protection area around the island were later restored.{{Cite web |title=腐败一把手"借岛发财"敛财过亿!中央生态环保督察曾指出其所涉项目问题_要闻_中国环境 |url=https://www.cenews.com.cn/news/202101/t20210127_969082.html |access-date=2021-12-08 |website=www.cenews.com.cn}}
On 30 December 2021, in the middle of its liquidity crisis, the developer Evergrande received a demolition order from the city of Danzhou relating to 39 buildings at the resort, due to planning law violation-they were built illegally. The company were given 10 days to take the buildings down. In a statement, Evergrande said the demolition notice applied "only" to buildings on plot 2-14-1 located on No. 2 Island and “does not involve other plots of land of the Ocean Flower Island project”.{{Cite web |title=恒大海花岛39栋楼被责令拆除,曾投资千亿,刚被评十大丑陋建筑 |url=https://new.qq.com/rain/a/20220101A07B5Z00 |access-date=2022-01-02 |language=zh-CN}}{{Cite web |date=2022-01-05 |title=Evergrande ordered to demolish 39 buildings on island mega resort |url=https://www.globalconstructionreview.com/evergrande-ordered-to-demolish-39-buildings-on-island-mega-resort/ |access-date=2022-01-05 |website=Global Construction Review |language=en-GB}}
