History

From circa 2001 to 2010, the number of students decreased by 300. Oelwein CSD superintendent Jim Patera stated that this enrollment decline and a 10% decline in money given by the state government put Oelwein CSD in, as paraphrased by Orlan Love of The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, "a serious financial bind".{{cite web|author=Love, Orlan|url=https://www.thegazette.com/2010/02/22/school-board-votes-to-close-harlan-elementary|title=School board votes to close Harlan Elementary|work=The Gazette|place=Cedar Rapids, Iowa|date=2010-02-22|accessdate=2020-04-08}}

Oelwein High principal Josh Ehn became the superintendent in 2017.{{cite web|url=http://www.communitynewspapergroup.com/oelwein_daily_register/ehn-is-new-oelwein-superintendent/article_ba1099ae-0d88-11e7-a7ea-07fdbd2ab53e.html|title=Ehn is new Oelwein superintendent|work=Oelwein Daily Register|date=2017-03-20|accessdate=2020-04-08}}

Enrollment declined by 58 from circa 2015 to 2018.{{cite web|author=Widner, Emma|url=http://www.communitynewspapergroup.com/oelwein_daily_register/oelwein-school-board-to-consider-grade-realignment/article_a18e4d16-fa3d-11e7-befc-9f826125768e.html|title=Oelwein School Board to consider grade realignment|work=Oelwein Daily Register|date=2018-01-11|accessdate=2020-04-08}} By 2018 the district revised the appearance of the husky mascot and introduced a new logo.{{cite web|url=http://www.communitynewspapergroup.com/oelwein_daily_register/superintendent-josh-ehn-gives-state-of-the-district-update-to/article_6443648a-cb18-11e8-883a-fff14910a13a.html|title=Superintendent Josh Ehn gives ‘state of the district’ update to OARSPA |work=Oelwein Daily Register|date=2019-10-08|accessdate=2020-04-08}} That year it also made plans to make the middle school cover 5th grade to make room for 1st grade students at Wings Park Elementary.

Schools

  • Oelwein High School (grades 9–12)
  • Oelwein Middle School (grades 5–8) - In 2018 several areas changed function, with the turf-floored activity center with a climbing wall installed in the former swimming pool area, and the science laboratories and classrooms being installed in the northwest wing.
