Route description

SR 852 begins on the Carl Perkins Memorial Bridge over the Ohio River. The route heads north as a two-lane highway, passing through farmland and woodland. The highway passes the Portsmouth Raceway Park and has an interchange with U.S. Route 52 (US 52), US 23 Truck, SR 73 east, and SR 104 south. The road has a traffic light at an access road from northbound SR 73 and SR 104. SR 852 ends at a partial interchange with SR 73 and SR 104.{{google maps|url=https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=OH-852+N%2FCarl+D.+Perkins+Bridge&daddr=OH-852+N&hl=en&ll=38.739021,-83.020442&spn=0.009858,0.01929&sll=38.743137,-83.024827&sspn=0.001232,0.002411&geocode=Fa7yTgIdgj8N-w%3BFSwsTwIdjCMN-w&mra=me&mrsp=1,0&sz=19&t=h&z=16|accessdate=January 24, 2012|title=Overview of State Route 852}}{{cite map |title=Ohio Highway Map |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/maps/11MapFiles/Front-11-PDF.pdf |format=PDF |publisher=Ohio Department of Transportation |date=2011 |cartography=ODOT |accessdate=January 24, 2013}}{{cite map |title=Map of Scioto County, Ohio |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/Planning/TechServ/TIM/Documents/CountyMaps_ColorOn/Sci_color.pdf |format=PDF |publisher=Ohio Department of Transportation |date=December 2008 |cartography=ODOT |accessdate=January 24, 2013}}

The department tracks the traffic volumes along all state highways as a part of its maintenance responsibilities using a metric called average annual daily traffic (AADT). This measurement is a calculation of the traffic level along a segment of roadway for any average day of the year. In 2011, ODOT figured that the lowest traffic levels were present on the section between the Kentucky state line and the interchange with US 52, where only 5,240 vehicles used the highway daily. The peak traffic volume was 12,730 vehicles AADT along a section of SR 852 on the bridge over US 52{{cite web|url=http://www.odotonline.org/techservapps/traffmonit/TMReports/TSR_Report/County_Reports/2011_Reports/sci11.pdf|title=Traffic Survey Report - Scioto County|year=2011|publisher=Ohio Department of Transportation|accessdate=January 24, 2013|format=PDF|at=SR-852|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305040240/http://www.odotonline.org/techservapps/traffmonit/TMReports/TSR_Report/County_Reports/2011_Reports/sci11.pdf|archive-date=March 5, 2016|url-status=dead}}
