History
One of the goals of the "Alexander S. Onassis" Charitable Foundation (which was founded in 1975 by the daughter of Aristotle Onassis, Christina) was the creation of a modern cardiac surgery center in Athens, since, while cardiac surgeries had already begun to be performed in Greece, the capabilities of state hospitals could not meet the needs of the Greek population, resulting in the ever-increasing exodus of a large number of heart patients abroad.{{cite web|url=https://www.onassis.org/health/onassis-cardiac-surgery-center/|title=Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center|publisher=Onassis Foundation|language=el, en|url-status=live|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20250428204430/https://www.onassis.org/health/onassis-cardiac-surgery-center/|archive-date=28 April 2025}}{{cite web|url=http://www.onasseio.gr/istoriko/|title= Onassio Cardiac Surgery Centre - Historical background|website=onasseio.gr|language=el|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250412085313/http://www.onasseio.gr/istoriko/|archive-date=12 April 2025}}{{cite web|url=https://www.ahajournals.org/pb-assets/AHAJournals/Circ/Hospitals%20History/Onassis%20Cardiac%20Surgery%20Center%20PDF-1716497241243.pdf|title=Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center history|publisher=Journal of the American Heart Association|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250514212500/https://www.ahajournals.org/pb-assets/AHAJournals/Circ/Hospitals%20History/Onassis%20Cardiac%20Surgery%20Center%20PDF-1716497241243.pdf|archive-date=14 May 2025}}
Construction work began in October 1987 (the foundation stone was laid on October 8, 1987, by the then Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou (1919-1996), who was to become the most famous patient of Onassios) and was completed in September 1992.{{cite web|url=https://www.onassis.org/press/construction-phase-onassis-national-transplant-center-begins|title=The Construction Phase Of The Onassis National Transplant Center Begins|publisher=Onassis Foundation|date=9 December 2019|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250514215909/https://www.onassis.org/press/construction-phase-onassis-national-transplant-center-begins|archive-date=14 May 2025}}{{cite web|url=https://en.protothema.gr/2024/09/03/pasok-the-political-phenomenon-that-reshaped-greece-turns-50-its-rise-fall-and-undefined-future/ |title=PASOK, the political phenomenon that reshaped Greece turns 50: Its rise, fall, and undefined future|date=3 September 2024|publisher=Proto Thema|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241130114320/https://en.protothema.gr/2024/09/03/pasok-the-political-phenomenon-that-reshaped-greece-turns-50-its-rise-fall-and-undefined-future/|archive-date=30 November 2024}} On October 6, 1992, the official opening of the operation took place of the center.
