The Oneida Railway, which was an interurban rail, was established in 1907 when the New York Central Railroad electrified {{Convert|49|mi|km}} of the West Shore Railroad between Syracuse, New York and Utica, New York.{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=J2zH-zcuU-MC&pg=PA314|title=The Electric Interurban Railways in America |author1=Hilton, George W.|author2=Due, John|name-list-style=amp|publisher=Stanford University Press|year=1960|page=314|isbn=0-8047-4014-3}} The interurban railroad used nontraditional third-rail pickup for power instead of the typical overhead catenary.
