Open access to scholarly communication in Denmark has grown rapidly since the 1990s. As in other countries in general, open access publishing is less expensive than traditional, paper-based, pre-Internet publishing.{{citation |author=John Houghton |title= Cost and benefits of alternative publishing models: Denmark |publisher= DEFF |location=Denmark |oclc=784112428 |via= Knowledge Exchange |url=http://www.knowledge-exchange.info/event/costs-benefits-open-access |year= 2009 }}
Repositories and platforms
There are a number of collections of scholarship in Denmark housed in digital open access repositories. They contain journal articles, book chapters, data, and other research outputs that are free to read. The consortial Scandinavian hprints repository began operating in 2008, specializing in arts, humanities, and social sciences content.{{cite web |work=Registry of Open Access Repositories |publisher=University of Southampton |location=UK |url= http://roar.eprints.org/view/geoname/geoname.html |title= Browse by Country: Europe: Denmark |access-date= 11 March 2018 }} In 2017, Aarhus University launched an open science platform, SPOMAN.{{citation |url=https://starbios2.eu/2017/open-science-platform-aarhus-university/ |year=2017 |title=The 1st Open Science platform, by Aarhus University, Denmark |work=Starbios2.eu }}{{cite web |url=http://spoman-os.org |title=SPOMAN Open Science (Fundamental Research within Smart POlymer MAterials and Nanocomposites |access-date= 9 March 2018 }}{{cite web |url= http://www.opendoar.org/countrylist.php?cContinent=Europe#Denmark |title= Denmark |work= Directory of Open Access Repositories |publisher= University of Nottingham |location= UK |access-date= 15 April 2018 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20090206084105/http://www.opendoar.org/countrylist.php?cContinent=Europe#Denmark |archive-date= 6 February 2009 |url-status= dead }}
