Ophichthys is a genus of swamp eels native to South Asia. They live in freshwater or subterranean habitats, and some have a fossorial lifestyle.{{Cite web|title=Ophichthys desilvai, a poorly known synbranchid eel from Sri Lanka (Teleostei: Synbranchidae)|url=https://pfeil-verlag.de/publikationen/ophichthys-desilvai-a-poorly-known-synbranchid-eel-from-sri-lanka/|access-date=2021-01-29|website=Pfeil Verlag|language=de-DE}}

Taxonomy

All species in this genus were formerly classified in Monopterus, but a 2020 study found them to represent a distinct monophyletic clade from Monopterus. Due to this, the genus name Ophichthys, previously coined by William Swainson, was revived to be used for them.{{Cite web|title=Taxonomy browser (Ophichthys)|url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Tree&id=2793284&lvl=3&p=has_linkout&lin=f&keep=1&srchmode=1&unlock|access-date=2021-01-29|website=www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov}} Ophichthys was formerly a wastebasket taxon used to lump in many unrelated species of eel-like fish (all of which are classified in separate genera today) and later synonymized with Monopterus until its resurrection.{{Cite web|title=WoRMS - World Register of Marine Species - Ophichthys Swainson, 1839|url=http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=206770|access-date=2021-01-29|website=www.marinespecies.org}}
