It occupies a deep part of the ocean where little sunlight penetrates.

The species has not been studied in-depth; not much is known besides its habitat and anatomical description. It is only known from a single female specimen.{{cite web |last1=Young |first1=Richard E. |last2=Vecchione |first2=Michael |title=Opisthoteuthis extensa |url=http://tolweb.org/Opisthoteuthis_extensa/20158 |website=Tree of Life Web Project |date=May 13, 2003}}

The type specimen, upon which the description is based, has small suckers, small eyes, and arms that do not vary much in length. The fins, which it uses for locomotion, are also very small. O. extensa may be the same species as Opisthoteuthis pluto.{{cite book |last1=Robson |first1=G.C. |title=A monograph of the recent Cephalopoda based on the collections in the British Museum (Natural History) |date=1929–1932 |page=173 |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/106032#/summary}}
