Background and promotion
Candy caught Sia's attention, and she contacted her via Instagram with the purpose of writing one song for her. Sia ended up executive producing Candy's debut record, helping her to get a record contract and to find, in Sia's words: "[a] decent, nice, honest management, and [to] help [her] make the art [she] want[s] to make from a place of positive mental health and love".{{cite web|url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/why-sia-is-one-of-the-most-important-artists-in-the-world-right-now-by-brooke-candy/|title=Brooke Candy: Sia is One of the Most Important Artists In the World Right Now|publisher=Noisey|author=Brooke Candy|date=March 8, 2016}} Candy signed with RCA in February 2014.{{cite web |date=18 February 2014 |title=Dynamic Rapper / Singer Brooke Candy Signs with RCA Records |url=http://www.rcarecords.com/news/dynamic-rappersinger-brooke-candy-signs-rca-records |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924085600/http://www.rcarecords.com/news/dynamic-rappersinger-brooke-candy-signs-rca-records |archive-date=Sep 24, 2015 |accessdate=21 November 2015 |publisher=RCA Records}} She later joined Columbia's UK roster.{{cite web |last=McCaskill |first=Clark |date=11 July 2014 |title=Brooke Candy drops this fire Cory Enemy remix of "Opulence" [Premiere] |url=http://earmilk.com/2014/07/11/brooke-candy-signs-to-columbia-records-and-drops-this-fire-cory-enemy-remix-of-opulance-premiere/ |publisher=EARMILK}} The first single and title track was performed on April 3, 2014, at Nicola Formichetti's debut Diesel fashion show in Venice.{{cite web|url=http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/87338967.html|title=Brooke Candy debuts "Opulence" at Formichetti's debut Diesel fashion show in Venice|work=Oh No They Didn't|author=FUCKFROSTI|date=April 15, 2014}} It was later released on April 22, 2014, as a digital download{{cite web |date=2014-04-22 |title=Opulence - Single by Brooke Candy |url=https://music.apple.com/us/album/opulence-single/849829947 |website=Apple Music}} along the premiere of its official music video directed by Steven Klein and styled by Formichetti.{{cite web|url=http://radio.com/2014/06/02/brooke-candy-opulence-video-formichetti-interview/|title=How Brooke Candy's Artful 'Opulence' Video Primes Her for Pop Stardom|work=Radio|author=Courtney E. Critical reception
The EP was generally praised by critics. Kevin Apaza from Direct Lyrics said "five songs featuring hard-hitting synths, fierce and risqué lyrics, and a swagger by Brooke that can't be duplicated. She's making us excited about female rappers again. There just have to be more options than Nicki or Iggy!".{{cite web|url=https://www.directlyrics.com/review-brooke-candy-opulence-ep-news.html|title=Review: Brooke Candy - 'Opulence' EP|work=Direct Lyrics|author=Kevin Apaza|date=May 12, 2014}} Ashley Emma NG from Best Fan also praised the project, saying "Opulence brings a fresh sound that is all Brook[e] Candy. Some may not understand her lascivious and unconventional attitude, but you can't help but respect her hustle. Her confidence is indestructible, and not once does it come off as cocky."{{cite web |author=Ng |first=Ashley Emma |date=May 14, 2014 |title=ALBUM REVIEW: Brooke Candy – 'Opulence' EP |url=http://bestfan.com/blog/2014/05/album-review-brooke-candy-opulence-ep/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170319201124/http://bestfan.com/blog/2014/05/album-review-brooke-candy-opulence-ep/ |archive-date=Mar 19, 2017 |work=Best Fan}}
