Orbexilum, commonly called leather-root,{{PLANTS|id=ORBEX|taxon=Orbexilum|access-date=25 July 2015}} is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family (Fabaceae). They are native to North America, where they are found in the United States and Mexico, south to Chiapas.{{cite web |url=http://www.herbarium.unc.edu/flora.htm |title= Flora of the Southern and Mid-Atlantic States |author= Alan Weakley |date= 2015}}
This genus can be distinguished from other genera in the Psoraleeae by its "thick glabrous pod walls that are distinctively rugose and by [a] calyx that is scarcely accrescent."{{cite journal | author = Turner BL. | year = 2008 | title = Revision of the genus Orbexilum (Fabaceae: Psoraleeae) | journal = Lundellia | volume = 11 | pages = 1–7 | doi = 10.25224/1097-993X-1.11.1 | url = https://w3.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/pdfs/Turner1-Lundellia11.pdf}}
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1832, with the type species O. latifolia, moved from Psoralea.{{IPNI|id=30000373-2|taxon=Orbexilum|access-date=2021-06-14}} (O. latifolia is now considered a synonym of O. onobrychis.{{cite web |title=Orbexilum latifolia |work=Plants of the World Online |publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew|url=https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:510592-1 |access-date=11 September 2023}}) Rafinesque differentiated Orbexilum from Psoralea largely on the basis of features of the calyx.{{Citation |mode=cs1 |last1=Rafinesque |first1=C.S. |date=1832 |title=107.
