A genetic study suggested that the species survived glaciation in three separate glacial refugia; these being south-central Chile, the eastern Patagonian Andes and eastern Tierra del Fuego.{{cite journal |last1=Pfanzelt |first1=S. |last2=Albach |first2=D.|last3=von Hagen|first3=K.B. |date=2017 |title=Tabula rasa in the Patagonian Channels?
