They received Protected designation of origin in 2016.{{cite web|url=http://orielseasalt.com/news.html|title=Oriel Sea Salt Company news - Oriel Sea Salt|website=orielseasalt.com}}{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=fmKJDwAAQBAJ&q=%22Oriel+Sea+Salt%22&pg=PT294|title=Irish Food Law: European, Domestic and International Frameworks|first=Caoimhín|last=MacMaoláin|date=February 21, 2019|publisher=Bloomsbury Publishing|isbn=9781509907809 |via=Google Books}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.thejournal.ie/louth-sea-salts-protected-status-2958788-Sep2016/|title=Sea salts that hail from Louth get EU 'protected status'|first=Christina|last=Finn|website=TheJournal.ie|date=4 September 2016 }}
