History

In July 2016 the William Edwards School and the South West Essex Community Education Trust applied to the Department for Education to build a new free school with the expectation that it would be completed by September 2019. It was speculated that the school was not to be built on the Orsett Heath but instead on nearby Gammon Field.{{Cite web|last=peterg|date=2016-07-19|title=William Edwards plan to build new school..but will it be on Orsett Heath?|url=https://www.yourthurrock.com/2016/07/19/william-edwards-plan-to-build-new-school-but-will-it-be-on-orsett-heath/|access-date=2021-11-16|website=Your Thurrock|language=en-US}} The plans were approved in April 2017 but the opening was delayed as the school's campus still hadn't been built due to delays in funding. The government granted the school permission to set up a temporary campus via a lease agreement with Blackshots based Thurrock Rugby Club and the school opened in September 2020, one year later than was scheduled.{{Cite web|title=Government gives support to delayed Orsett Heath Academy|url=https://www.thurrockgazette.co.uk/news/17998736.government-gives-support-delayed-orsett-heath-academy/|access-date=2021-11-16|website=Thurrock Gazette|date=28 October 2019 |language=en}}{{Cite web|date=2019-10-25|title=Orsett Heath Academy confirmed to open in September 2020 following 'approval to open' from Department for Education|url=https://www.yourthurrock.com/2019/10/25/orsett-heath-academy-confirmed-open-september-2020-following-approval-open-department-education/|access-date=2021-11-16|website=Your Thurrock|language=en-US}}

The school's permanent campus, which will have a capacity for 1200 students and is located adjacent to Stanford Road, is currently under construction on the Blackshots playing fields. Originally expected to open in September 2022,{{Cite web |author= |title=Full application submitted for new 1,200 pupil Orsett Heath Academy |url=https://thurrock.nub.news/n/full-application-submitted-for-new-1200-pupil-orsett-heath-school |access-date=2021-11-16 |website=Thurrock Nub News |date=19 August 2021 |language=en}} there has been a delay in its completion due to the collapse of Caledonian Modular Ltd, the company that was tasked with building the site. Another building will be added to the temporary campus at Thurrock Rugby Club to make room for the enrolment of another 120 students in September 2022.{{Cite web |last=Speight |first=Neil |date=2022-04-22 |title=Temporary school building at rugby club is approved |url=https://thurrock.nub.news/news/local-news/temporary-school-building-at-rugby-club-is-approved-129868 |access-date=2022-06-12 |website=Thurrock Nub News |language=en}}
