Orthaulax is an extinct genus of sea snails in the family Strombidae.
Description
Orthaulax have spires and spiral lines, which vary based on species and age of the specimen. Initially, Orthaulax was thought to not show signs of variation in color, but it has later been discovered that colored patterns can be seen on non-eroded specimens of Orthaulax when they are shined with an ultraviolet light.{{cite journal |last1=Vokes |first1=Harold E |last2=Vokes |first2=Emily H |title=Variation in the Genus Orthaulax (Mollusca: Gastropoda) |journal=Tulane Studies in Geology and Paleontology |date=1968 |volume=6 |issue=2 |url=https://journals.tulane.edu/tsgp/article/view/477 |access-date=21 June 2025}}
Geology
Its fossils are most often found in areas with high lime content.{{cite journal |last1=Vokes |first1=Harold E |last2=Vokes |first2=Emily H |title=Variation in the Genus Orthaulax (Mollusca: Gastropoda) |journal=Tulane Studies in Geology and Paleontology |date=1968 |volume=6 |issue=2 |url=https://journals.tulane.edu/tsgp/article/view/477 |access-date=21 June 2025}} Examples of Orthaulax have been dated to the Oligocene and Miocene.{{cite journal |last1=Wythe Cooke |first1=C |title=Stratigraphic Significance of Orthaulax |journal=Bulletin of the Geological Society of America |date=1920 |volume=31 }}
