Osprey Island is an island located in Gladhouse Reservoir, Scotland. The largest of the three main islands in the reservoir, it is around 5 acres in size and is completely forested in a thick cover of native Scots Pine and other Broadleaf trees around the edge of the land.{{Cite web |title=View map: Ordnance Survey, NT2853-NT2953 - AA - Ordnance Survey 1:2500 scale map - Ordnance Survey National Grid Maps, 1940s-1970s |url=https://maps.nls.uk/view/130078430 |access-date=2025-01-25 |website=maps.nls.uk}} Visitors are encouraged to be respectful if they visit the island and avoid disturbing wildlife or important Osprey nesting sites.https://www.scottishwater.co.uk/-/media/ScottishWater/Document-Hub/In-Your-Area/Investments/Gladhouse-Reservoir/Gladhouse-Reservoir-visitor-survey-summary-report---November-2021.pdf
History
The island was formed as the surrounding area was flooded to create the reservoir in 1879, and has since became a mostly disregarded and unexplored piece of land, although it is now extremely rich in wildlife due to little to no human intervention in over 100 years.{{Cite web |title=Gladhouse Reservoir from The Gazetteer for Scotland |url=https://www.scottish-places.info/features/featurefirst2640.html |access-date=2025-01-25 |website=www.scottish-places.info |language=en-gb}}
Wildlife
Nesting ospreys have been recorded on the island, as well as other birds such as wintering pink-footed geese. The surrounding water is home to trout, and the thick vegetation on the island provides a home and food source to other wildlife.{{Cite web |title=Visiting Gladhouse Reservoir - Scottish Water |url=https://www.scottishwater.co.uk/In-Your-Area/Visiting-our-Reservoirs/Sites/Gladhouse-Reservoir |access-date=2025-01-25 |website=www.scottishwater.co.uk |language=en}}
Research
Work has been done to research and conserve Osprey Island and the surrounding area, although no big steps have been done in recent times.https://www.nature.scot/sites/default/files/site-special-scientific-interest/692/site-management-statement.pdf
