Name

In classical antiquity, the Osum river was known as the Apsus, which is a derivative of the Indo-European root *ăp- "water, river". The Illyrian hydronym Apsus, corresponds to Apsias, a river name in southern Italy brought by Illyrian migrations (Iapygians) in the region.{{cite book |last1=Palmer |first1=Leonard Robert |title=The Latin Language |date=1988 |publisher=University of Oklahoma Press |isbn=0-8061-2136-X |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=O7z4Sl-SgFEC |page=40}}
