Background and release
On June 23, 2024, the production committee of the anime Dandadan announced that Creepy Nuts would perform the opening theme song for the anime, titled "Otonoke".{{cite news |title=ジャンプ+連載『ダンダダン』アニメ化、OP主題歌をCreepy Nutsが担当 DJ松永&R-指定"似たものを感じた"と期待誘う |url=https://0115765.com/archives/77235 |access-date=October 9, 2024 |work=Otaku Lab |date=June 23, 2024 |language=ja}} One half of the duo R-Shitei described that the song interpreted "how when supernatural beings or spirits possess people, they 'resonate with and connect with pain and sadness', which is very similar to the relationship between music creators and listeners."{{cite news |title=Creepy Nutsの新曲"オトノケ"がアニメ「ダンダダン」OPテーマに決定 DJ松永「世界に無い曲作ったぞと思える曲」 |url=https://mikiki.tokyo.jp/articles/-/38172 |access-date=October 9, 2024 |work=Mikiki |date=June 23, 2024 |language=ja}} The snippet of "Otonoke" first featured on the anime's third trailer, previewed on August 20.{{cite news |title=「ダンダダン」Creepy Nutsが歌うOPテーマ入りPV公開、EDテーマはずとまよ |url=https://natalie.mu/comic/news/587225 |access-date=August 20, 2024 |work=Natalie |date=August 20, 2024 |language=ja}} The duo released the song digitally on October 4,{{cite news |title=Creepy Nuts、TVアニメ『ダンダダン』OPテーマ「オトノケ」10月4日配信リリースが決定! 新アーティスト写真もあわせて公開! |url=https://www.lisani.jp/0000266221/ |access-date=October 9, 2024 |work=Lisani |date=September 19, 2024 |language=ja}} and physically on CD single on December 11.{{cite news |title=Creepy Nuts「オトノケ」のCDリリースが決定! A month after the release, a user on the website Reddit discovered that the song had artifacts of sampling from a sped and pitched-up excerpt of the 1915 song "I've Been Floating Down the Old Green River" performed by American singer Billy Murray, disproving a popular theory that the song had sampled sounds from the Pikmin series of video games.{{cite web |last1=Valdez |first1=Nick |title=Dandadan Really Doesn't Sample Pikmin in Its Opening and Here's the Proof |url=https://comicbook.com/anime/news/dandadan-opening-pikmin-sample-explained-debunked/ |website=ComicBook.com |access-date=November 5, 2024 |date=November 4, 2024}}
Music video
A music video for "Otonoke" premiered on October 18, 2024. Directed by Masaki Watanabe, the chaotic music video expresses the dark atmosphere of the song by using several visual techniques, including Creepy Nuts in phenakistoscope and zoetrope created by 3D scanning as well as "Fatman Scoop-style big head" effects.{{cite news |title=Creepy Nuts最新曲「オトノケ」MV公開、カオティックな世界をMasaki Watanabeが手がける |url=https://bezzy.jp/2024/10/52311/ |access-date=October 18, 2024 |work=Bezzy |date=October 18, 2024 |language=ja}}{{cite news |last1=Shepherd |first1=Charles |title=Creepy Nuts drop trippy video for DAN DA DAN theme 'Otonoke' |url=https://electricbloomwebzine.com/2024/10/creepy-nuts-drop-trippy-video-for-dan-da-dan-theme-otonoke.html |access-date=October 23, 2024 |work=Electric Bloom Webzine |date=October 18, 2024}} The collaborated music video with Dandadan was released on October 31.
