Background and composition

"Over and Over and Over" was recorded by White in March 2005 when he was still in the White Stripes during the Get Behind Me Satan sessions and again in January 2007 during the Icky Thump sessions.{{cite web |title=TheWhiteStripes C tapelabel |url=http://media.columbiarecords.com/jackwhite/timeline/TheWhiteStripes_C_tapelabel.jpg |website=Columbia Records |publisher=Columbia Records |access-date=4 January 2024}}{{cite book |title=Ecky Thump |date=2017 |publisher=Third Man Books}} He would later attempt to record it again with his side projects, the Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and his first solo album, Blunderbuss.{{cite web |title=Jack White Interview - HD Radio Sound Space at KROQ |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJLCOBN5NEg |website=YouTube |publisher=KROQ |access-date=28 March 2024 |date=22 March 2018}} The song was also recorded in collaboration with American rapper Jay-Z under the title "Ray Bans". Ultimately, he chose not to record the song until the sessions for Boarding House Reach in 2017. White recalled in an article with Rolling Stone that he "chased it and chased it" and eventually managed to finally have a final product ready.{{Cite magazine |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/jack-white-new-lp-lost-white-stripes-song-touring-w515897 |title=Jack White on Genre-Blending New LP, Lost White Stripes Song, Touring |last=Doyle |first=Patrick |date=January 26, 2018 |magazine=Rolling Stone |access-date=January 27, 2018}}

"Over and Over and Over" has been described as a throwback to White's earlier garage rock works{{Cite web |url=http://trendprivemagazine.com/2018/04/02/jack-white-boarding-house-reach-album-review/ |title=Jack White: Boarding House Reach Album Review |last=Cheng |first=Mason |date=April 2, 2018 |website=Trend Privé |access-date=April 18, 2018}} as well as a "blues rock jam".{{Cite web |url=https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/03/jack-white-unveils-over-and-over-and-over/ |title=Jack White unveils "Over and Over and Over", a dirty blues rock jam originally written for The White Stripes: Stream |last=Young |first=Alex |date=March 1, 2018 |website=Consequence of Sound |access-date=April 18, 2018}} White served as the vocalist and performed electric guitar and tambourine on the track. It featured contributions from several session musicians. Louis Cato and Daru Jones played drums while Bobby Allende provided percussion, Charlotte Kemp Muhl played bass, and Neal Evans and DJ Harrison performed on synthesizers. White wrote, produced, and mixed the song, while Joshua V. Smith did the engineering with Ben Schmitz and Grant Valentine providing engineering assistance.{{cite AV media notes|title=Boarding House Reach|others=Jack White|year=2018|type=album liner notes|publisher=Third Man Records}}
