The school reports some of the highest test scores in New York City. Therefore, it is considered one of the best schools in New York City. It was one of the first schools in the city to adopt very stringent teaching requirements to adhere to nationally developed performance standards in the 1990s. 88% of the teachers have a master's degree or higher.{{cite news |first=Mathew R. |last=Warren |title=Upper East Side Public Schools |url=http://www.uppereast.com/publicschools.html |accessdate=2008-09-26 }}

In 2010, 96% of fifth grade students performed at or above standards on state and city tests in the subjects of English and mathematics. The school's mascot is the owl, perhaps not coincidentally one of the ancient symbols of wisdom.
