PaNie is a 25 kDa protein produced by the root rot disease-causing pathogen Pythium aphanidermatum. It stands for Pythium aphanidermatum Necrosis inducing elicitor. PaNie (aka NLPPya) belongs to a family of elicitors named the Nep1-like proteins (NLPs), which cause necrosis when injected into the leaves of dicotyledonous plants.{{cite journal |doi=10.1104/pp.010350 |last1=Veit |first1=Stefan |last2=Wörle |first2=Jörg Manfred |last3=Nürnberger |first3=Thorsten |last4=Koch |first4=Wolfgang |last5=Seitz |first5=Hanns Ulrich |title=A novel protein elicitor (PaNie) from Pythium aphanidermatum induces multiple defense responses in carrot, Arabidopsis, and tobacco |journal=Plant Physiology |volume=127 |issue=3 |pages=832–41 |year=2001 |pmid=11706166 |pmc=129255 |url=http://www.plantphysiol.org/cgi/pmidlookup?view=long&pmid=11706166}}
