PRTG (Paessler Router Traffic Grapher ) is a network monitoring software developed by Paessler GmbH. It monitors system conditions like bandwidth usage or uptime and collect statistics from miscellaneous hosts such as switches, routers, servers, and other devices and applications.
It was initially released on May 29, 2003 by the German company Paessler GmbH which was founded by Dirk Paessler in 2001.{{Cite news|url=https://blog.paessler.com/how-it-all-started-11-years-prtg-network-monitor|title=How It All Started: 11 Years PRTG Network Monitor|last=Paessler|first=Dirk|access-date=2018-08-29|language=en-us}}
The software is available in three versions: a classic standalone solution (PRTG Network Monitor), one for large and distributed networks (PRTG Enterprise Monitor) and a SaaS-version (PRTG Hosted Monitor).{{Cite web|title=Paessler - The Monitoring Experts|url=https://www.paessler.com/|access-date=2021-12-14|website=www.paessler.com|language=en}}
Specifications
The software has an auto-discovery mode that scans predefined areas of an enterprise network and creates a device list from this data. Further information on the detected devices can be retrieved using communication protocols like ICMP, SNMP, WMI, NetFlow, jFlow, sFlow, DCOM or the RESTful API.{{Cite web|url=https://www.paessler.com/manuals/prtg/available_sensor_types|title=List of Available Sensor Types - PRTG Network Monitor User Manual|website=www.paessler.com|access-date=2018-08-22}}
=Sensors=
The software is based on sensors, e.g. HTTP, SMTP/POP3 (e-mail) application sensors and hardware-specific sensors for switches, routers and servers. The software has over 200 different predefined sensors that retrieve statistics from the monitored instances, e.g. response times, processor, memory, database information, temperature or system status.{{Cite news|url=http://www.itpro.co.uk/network-internet/30681/paessler-prtg-network-monitor-174-review|title=Paessler PRTG Network Monitor 17.4 review|work=IT PRO|access-date=2018-08-21|language=en}}{{cite journal|last1=Chakchai|first1=So-In|title=A Survey of Network Traffic Monitoring and Analysis Tools|citeseerx=10.1.1.138.7759}}
=Web interface and desktop client=
The software can be operated via an AJAX-based web interface which is suitable for both real-time troubleshooting and data exchange with non-technical staff via maps (dashboards) and user-defined reports.{{Cite web|url=https://www.paessler.com/manuals/prtg/ajax_gui_basic|title=Ajax Web Interface—Basic Procedures - PRTG Network Monitor User Manual|website=www.paessler.com|access-date=2018-08-22}} An additional administration interface in the form of a desktop application for Windows, Linux, and macOS is available.{{Cite web|url=https://www.paessler.com/prtg/prtg-desktop|title=PRTG Desktop|website=www.paessler.com|language=en|access-date=2018-08-22}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.paessler.com/prtg-desktop-app|title=PRTG Desktop|website=www.paessler.com|access-date=2019-05-06}}
=Notifications, reports and price model=
In addition to the usual communication channels such as Email and SMS, notification is also provided via an app for iOS or Android.{{Cite news|url=https://uk.pcmag.com/paessler-prtg-network-monitor/84134/review/paessler-prtg-network-monitor|title=Paessler PRTG Network Monitor|date=31 July 2020|website=PC Mag UK|author=Daniel Brame|language=en-GB}} The software also provides customizable reports and its price model is based on sensors.{{Cite book |url=https://archive.org/details/securitysagesgui00andr |title=Security sage's guide to hardening the network infrastructure |date=2004 |publisher=Syngress Pub |others=Andrés, Steven. |isbn=1931836337 |location=Rockland, MA |pages=[https://archive.org/details/securitysagesgui00andr/page/n281 255] |oclc=54985361 |url-access=limited}}
