Discovery and naming
Palaeochersis talampayensis is known from three specimens: PULR 68 (holotype), a skull and postcranium. PULR 69, a right tarsus and pes, and PULR 72, a skull. The three specimens were each collected together in 1992 within the Los Colorados Formation, Argentina.{{Cite journal |last1=Szczygielski |first1=Tomasz |last2=Dróżdż |first2=Dawid |last3=Chanthasit |first3=Phornphen |last4=Manitkoon |first4=Sita |last5=Ditbanjong |first5=Pitaksit |date=2025-03-19 |title=The Triassic turtle of Thailand – revision of 'Proganochelys' ruchae |url=https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0316338 |journal=PLOS ONE |language=en |volume=20 |issue=3 |doi=10.1371/journal.pone.0316338 |doi-broken-date=20 March 2025 |issn=1932-6203 |doi-access=free}}
Palaeochersis talampayensis was then named and described by Rougier, de la Fuente & Arcucci (1995).
Classification
