The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines," it is the country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige. It was named after Carlos Palanca Sr., the Chinese Filipino businessman and philanthropist.[http://www.palancaawards.com.ph/index.php/history History] palancaawards.com.ph
The literary competition began with a long-term vision straddling two complementary tracks: to provide incentives for Filipino writers to craft the best literary pieces, and to be a treasury to the country's literary gems. Winning works are entered in the competition either as previously published pieces or in manuscript form.{{cite news |first=Dheza Marie |last=Aguilar |title=Ang Ika-57 Gawad Carlos Palanca |url=http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife2_sept15_2007 |publisher=Manila Standard |date=September 15, 2007 |access-date=December 17, 2007 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20071217104314/http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife2_sept15_2007 |archive-date = December 17, 2007}}, from Internet Archives The Palanca Awards, organized by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, is one of the Philippines' longest-running awards programs.{{cite news|url=http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=461458&publicationSubCategoryId=79|title=Palanca Awards announces deadline for submission of entries P|date=April 27, 2009|publisher=Philstar.com|access-date=April 30, 2009}} Among its winners include several National Artists for Literature, including Nick Joaquin, Edith L.
