It is known from a single somewhat poorly preserved skull around {{Convert|3|cm|in}} in length from the earliest Triassic Katberg Formation (Beaufort Group) in the upper Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone of South Africa. It is currently the earliest known lepidosauromorph.{{Cite journal|last1=Ford|first1=David P.|last2=Evans|first2=Susan E.|last3=Choiniere|first3=Jonah N.|last4=Fernandez|first4=Vincent|last5=Benson|first5=Roger B.
