The pallium was a Roman cloak. It was similar in form to the palla, which had been worn by respectable Roman women since the mid-Republican era.{{Cite book |last=Radicke |first=Jan |url=https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110711554-018/html |title=2 pallium – the regular female cloak |date=2022 |publisher=De Gruyter |isbn=978-3-11-071155-4 |language=en |doi=10.1515/9783110711554-018}} It was a rectangular length of cloth,Tertullian, De Pallio, I as was the himation in ancient Greece. The garment varied in fineness, colour and ornament. It could be white, purple red (purpurea from murex), black,Apuleius, The Golden Ass, XI 3 yellow, blue, pale green, etc.
The pallium was originally considered to be exclusively Greek and despised by Romans, but was favoured by ordinary people, philosophers, and pedagogues. Tertullian thought it the most appropriate garment for philosophers and Christians.{{in lang|fr}} [http://www.tertullian.org/articles/boissier_manteau.htm/ French article about De Pallio] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110108053441/http://tertullian.org/articles/boissier_manteau.htm |date=2011-01-08 }}
