Pandlr, also simply known as PAN, is a Brazilian Internet forum focused on discussions about pop culture and the entertainment industry. The forum is particularly popular among the Brazilian LGBTQ community.{{Cite web|last=Fernando Berenguel|date=2020-07-02|title=Ludmilla diz que viverá relação a três com Manu Gavassi e sua esposa; entenda!|url=https://observatoriodemusica.uol.com.br/noticia/ludmilla-diz-que-vivera-relacao-a-tres-com-manu-gavassi-e-sua-esposa-entenda|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Obsevatório de Música|language=pt-BR}}{{Cite web|date=2018-08-29|title=Selena Gomez Was Reportedly Invited To Headline The 2019 Super Bowl Halftime Show|url=https://www.breatheheavy.com/selena-gomez-reportedly-invited-headline-2019-super-bowl-halftime-show/|access-date=2020-11-21|website=BreatheHeavy.com|language=en-US}}
History
Pandlr began in 2005 as the Jovem Pan community on Orkut, originally dedicated to discussions about the Jovem Pan radio station. Following Orkut's shutdown in 2014, the community moved through various platforms, including Grupia, Yoble, and VK, before launching its own dedicated website in March 2015. It was then renamed Pandlr, transitioning from a niche radio fan forum to a broader pop culture discussion platform.{{Cite web |date= |title=ON: Qual a história da Pan? - PAN - pandlr |url=https://pandlr.com/forum/20-pan/forum/topic/on-qual-a-historia-da-pan/page/2/?cache=1 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://archive.today/20180913213521/https://pandlr.com/forum/20-pan/forum/topic/on-qual-a-historia-da-pan/page/2/?cache=1 |archive-date=2018-09-13 |access-date=2020-11-21 |website=Pandlr}}
The forum became widely recognized on the Brazilian internet for its viral meme creations, especially in GIF format. Notable examples include memes featuring Brazilian singer Gretchen, which became highly popular and played a significant role in earning her the title of "Brazilian Meme Queen".{{Cite web|last=Farinhuke|first=Vinicius|date=2016-08-24|title=A Gretchenização na Internet|url=https://medium.com/tend%C3%AAncias-digitais/a-gretcheniza%C3%A7%C3%A3o-na-internet-3efa4450f951|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Medium|language=pt-br}} In 2017, Pandlr drew national and international attention when a member created a series of GIFs featuring Cuca, a character from the Brazilian children's television series Sítio do Picapau Amarelo.{{Cite web|last=Carolina Maia|first=Maria|date=|title=O petróleo é nosso: Cuca, do Sítio, vira ícone gay internacional|url=https://veja.abril.com.br/cultura/que-diria-monteiro-lobato-cuca-do-sitio-vira-icone-gay/|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Veja|language=pt-BR}}{{Cite web|last=Rodriguez|first=Mathew|date=|title=Cuca, a Brazilian folkloric crocodile, is Twitter's new favorite meme|url=https://www.mic.com/articles/180181/cuca-brazilian-alligator-crocodile-twitter-meme|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Mic|language=en}} These GIFs became global memes; media outlets like The South African and Highsnobiety highlighted Pandlr's creations as some of the best memes of the year.{{Cite web|last=Roux|first=Erene|date=2017-12-20|title=2017 in Memes: Looking back at the most popular memes of the year|url=https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/2017-memes-the-best-of-the-year/|access-date=2020-11-21|website=The South African|language=en-ZA}}{{Cite web|last=Hall|first=Jake|date=2019-11-25|title=The 23 Best Memes Of 2017|url=https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/best-memes-2017/|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Highsnobiety|language=en}}
In mid-2017, the forum introduced a project called “Memepedia”, an archive intended to document and, in theory, protect the authorship of memes originating from its community.{{Cite web |last=Caetano |first=Alexandre |last2=Menezes |first2=Nathalia |date=2017-12-03 |title=Quem são os verdadeiros responsáveis pelos memes no Brasil? |url=https://medium.com/etnodigital/quem-s%C3%A3o-os-verdadeiros-respons%C3%A1veis-pelos-memes-no-brasil-bc3824f3ff42 |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=ETNOdigital |language=pt-br |via=Medium}} In February 2018, Pandlr attracted additional media attention after spreading a rumor that American singer Selena Gomez had been invited to headline the Super Bowl halftime show the following year.{{Cite web|last=Gould|first=Ethan|date=2018-02-09|title=Twitter Is Fangin' For A Bitta Selena Gomez At The Next Super Bowl|url=https://www.pedestrian.tv/pez/twitter-fangin-bitta-selena-gomez-next-super-bowl/|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Pedestrian TV|language=en-US}} However, this claim was later proven to be false.{{Cite web|last=Markus|first=Nick|date=2018-02-09|title=Selena Gomez's Fans Campaign For Her On Social Media To Perform At Next Year's Super Bowl!|url=https://celebrityinsider.org/selena-gomezs-fans-campaign-for-her-on-social-media-to-perform-at-next-years-super-bowl-113559/|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Celebrity Insider|language=en-US}}
In early 2023, the forum underwent maintenance before relaunching in February with a new version called Pandlr 3.0.{{Cite web |date= |title=Pandlr.com {{!}} Em manutenção |url=https://pandlr.com/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://archive.today/20230124235554/https://pandlr.com/ |archive-date=24 January 2023 |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=Pandlr}}{{Cite web |title=Pandlr 3.0 {{!}} Simple forums, better forums! |url=https://pandlr.com/forum/20-pan/forum/topic/on-qual-a-historia-da-pan/?cache=1 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://archive.today/20230202163716/https://pandlr.com/forum/20-pan/forum/topic/on-qual-a-historia-da-pan/?cache=1 |archive-date=February 2, 2023 |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=Pandlr}} Prior to this update, the platform had amassed over 330,000 registered members. In August 2024, Pandlr once again made headlines when it became the origin of the hoax soap opera Pé de Chinesa, which quickly became a viral sensation online.{{Cite web |last=Ferro |first=Ives |date=August 31, 2024 |title=Quem criou Pé de Chinesa? Controversies
In 2018, Pandlr became embroiled in a controversy involving American rapper Azealia Banks. The issue arose after the forum’s official Twitter account described Banks as "very unprepared for the music industry, despite her talent" and claimed that she "never misses an opportunity to stir up drama between people." This statement quickly gained traction on social media, leading to backlash from Banks’ fans.{{Cite web|last=Gregório|first=Leo|date=2020-09-24|title=Além de Anitta e Pabllo Vittar, Azealia Banks já brigou com outras dezenas de famosos|url=https://revistaquem.globo.com/QUEM-News/noticia/2020/09/alem-de-anitta-e-pabllo-vittar-azealia-banks-ja-brigou-com-outras-dezenas-de-famosos.html|access-date=2020-11-21|website=Quem}}
Another significant controversy involving Pandlr arose when a private Facebook group bearing the same name was accused of racism. A viral Twitter thread exposed screenshots of group members making racist comments and sharing offensive memes targeting Black people. The controversy gained widespread attention after a 2018 article by BuzzFeed Brasil highlighted the situation.{{Cite web |last=Nascimento |first=Victor |date=September 25, 2018 |title=Uma thread no Twitter expôs o racismo entre homens gays no grupo da PAN |url=https://buzzfeed.com.br/post/uma-thread-no-twitter-expos-o-racismo-entre-homens-gays-no-grupo-da-pan |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210112195030/https://buzzfeed.com.br/post/uma-thread-no-twitter-expos-o-racismo-entre-homens-gays-no-grupo-da-pan |archive-date=January 12, 2021 |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=BuzzFeed Brasil |language=pt-br}} Following public backlash, Pandlr administrators issued a statement clarifying that they had no affiliation with the Facebook group, despite the shared name. They emphasized that the forum itself does not condone hate speech or discriminatory behavior.
During Brazil’s 2022 presidential election campaign, Pandlr was once again at the center of controversy due to the spread of misinformation regarding then-president Jair Bolsonaro. According to a report by Gazeta do Povo, the forum was attributed as the origin of misleading narratives alleging connections between Bolsonaro and Freemasonry, as well as satanism.{{Cite web |date=October 5, 2022 |title=“Jair Maçonaro satanista”: como petistas criam fake news para atrair voto evangélico |url=https://www.gazetadopovo.com.br/ideias/jair-maconaro-satanista-como-petistas-criam-fake-news-para-atrair-voto-evangelico/ |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=Gazeta do Povo |language=pt-BR}}{{Cite web |last=Ágape |first=David |date=October 5, 2022 |title=‘Gabinete do Amor’: o esquadrão para defender Lula e atacar opositores |url=https://www.ainvestigacao.com/p/gabinete-do-amor-o-esquadrao-para |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=A Investigação |language=pt-br |via=Substack}} These claims were purportedly used as a strategy to sway evangelical voters away from supporting Bolsonaro.{{Cite news |last=Gragnani |first=Juliana |last2=Braun |first2=Julia |date=October 4, 2022 |title=Acusações de satanismo e vídeo na maçonaria marcam início da campanha no 2º turno |url=https://www.bbc.com/portuguese/brasil-63138847 |access-date=2025-04-03 |work=BBC News Brasil |language=pt-BR}}{{Cite web |last=Pombo |first=Bárbara |date=2022-10-07 |title=Satanismo e maçonaria turbinam ‘fake news’ nas redes |url=https://valor.globo.com/politica/eleicoes-2022/noticia/2022/10/07/satanismo-e-maconaria-turbinam-fake-news-nas-redes.ghtml |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=Valor Econômico |language=pt-br}} Discussions on the forum further amplified these narratives, contributing to their widespread dissemination.
In November 2024, Brazilian singer Gretchen, who had long been a recurring subject of memes on the Pandlr forum, an exposure that cemented her status as Brazil's “Queen of Memes”, announced her intention to sue Pandlr. This decision came after forum members allegedly created and disseminated defamatory AI-generated videos linking her image to prostitution.{{Cite tweet |author=Gretchen |author-link=Gretchen (singer) |user=GretchenCantora |number=1857054624097693826 |title=Entenderam né? |language=pt-br |access-date=April 2, 2025}} These videos were subsequently shared on X (formerly Twitter), prompting Gretchen to also initiate legal action against the social media platform.{{Cite web |date=February 6, 2025 |title=Gretchen processa rede social de Elon Musk após polêmicas |url=https://www.msn.com/pt-br/noticias/ciencia-e-tecnologia/gretchen-processa-rede-social-de-elon-musk-ap%C3%B3s-pol%C3%AAmicas/ss-AA1ywrl0 |access-date=2025-04-03 |website=MSN |language=pt-br}} According to reports, the videos were produced without her consent and aimed to ridicule and humiliate her by falsely associating her with explicit content.{{Cite web |last=Oliveira |first=Fábia |date=February 6, 2025 |title=Gretchen processa X após vídeo sobre sexo e candidatura política |url=https://www.metropoles.com/colunas/fabia-oliveira/gretchen-processa-x-apos-video-sobre-sexo-e-candidatura-politica |access-date=April 3, 2025 |website=Metrópoles |language=pt-BR}}
Impact
Brazilian researchers in memetics and digital anthropology have highlighted Pandlr as one of the most influential forces behind meme creation in Brazil, as well as a major hub for LGBTQ Internet culture.{{Cite journal |last=Rodrigues |first=Eduardo |date=December 2020 |title=Memetização da trollagem em fóruns de música pop: Conversações em rede e performance em tópicos sobre fracasso de álbuns |url=https://www.researchgate.net/publication/354031329_Memetizacao_da_trollagem_em_foruns_de_musica_pop_Conversacoes_em_rede_e_performance_em_topicos_sobre_fracasso_de_albuns |journal=Intercom (Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação) |language=pt-br |location=43º Congresso Brasileiro de Ciências da Comunicação |publication-place=Salvador, Bahia |via=ResearchGate}} Studies on internet humor and the spread of viral content suggest that niche communities like Pandlr play a fundamental role in shaping online discourse, often setting trends that later reach mainstream platforms.{{Cite web |last=Declercq |first=Marie |title=Como o LDRV se tornou a espinha dorsal do Brasil memético |url=https://www.vice.com/pt/article/como-o-ldrv-se-tornou-a-espinha-dorsal-do-brasil-memetico/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180121133130/https://www.vice.com/pt_br/article/kz3dz9/como-o-ldrv-se-tornou-a-espinha-dorsal-do-brasil-memetico |archive-date=January 21, 2018 |access-date=April 3, 2025 |website=Vice Brasil |language=pt-br}}
