Development

It was first introduced into service in the mid-1990s through project JP65. Parakeet was considered (at the time) advanced military communications. This included secure voice and data trunking services.

Project JP2072 was raised in 2017,{{Cite web |last=Durrant |first=Patrick |date=November 1, 2017 |title=Rollout for 2B as JP2072 gathers pace |url=https://www.australiandefence.com.au/c4i-ew/rollout-for-2b-as-jp2072-gathers-pace}} to upgrade its sub-systems. As described in the project summary, Parakeet was developed as a Battlespace Communications System Land (BCS-L), aiming to replace older, less effective Battlefield Telecommunications Network (BTN).{{Cite web |title=Project Data Summary Sheet |url=https://www.anao.gov.au/sites/default/files/Auditor-General_Report_2020-2021_19_PDSS_Battlespace_Communications_Systems_2B.pdf}} It was operated by Royal Australian Corps of Signals (RASIGS{{Cite web |title=From Wagtail, Raven, Pintail to Project Currawong Battlespace Communications System… Boeing Defence Australia’s Project Currawong |url=https://racitidesigns.wordpress.com/2020/08/26/from-wagtail-to-project-currawong/}}) personnel.
