The province of Paraná was one of the provinces of the Empire of Brazil. It was created by law on 29 August 1853, which split the comarca of Curitiba from the province of São Paulo and elevated it to the status of province.{{Cite web |title=História |url=https://cidades.ibge.gov.br/brasil/pr/historico |access-date=2023-07-03 |website=cidades.ibge.gov.br}}
In 1889, following the proclamation of the Republic in Brazil, it became the state of Paraná.{{Cite web |title=Portal da Câmara dos Deputados |url=https://www2.camara.leg.br/legin/fed/decret/1824-1899/decreto-1-15-novembro-1889-532625-publicacaooriginal-14906-pe.html |access-date=2023-07-03 |website=www2.camara.leg.br}}
History
The territory that eventually became the province of Paraná was a comarca of the captaincy of São Paulo. The region was neglected and suffered from lack of attention from the government of São Paulo, which prompted some of the locals to desire having a province of their own.{{Cite book |last=Priori |first=Angelo |url=https://books.scielo.org/id/k4vrh/pdf/priori-9788576285878-02.pdf |title=História do Paraná: séculos XIX e XX |publisher=Eduem |place=Maringá |year=2012 |isbn=978-85-7628-587-8}}
The political debate on the creation of the province of Paraná continued on 12 April 1843 when Joaquim José Pacheco, a general deputy for São Paulo, presented to the Chamber of Deputies of the Empire of Brazil a request for information on the pretensions of the inhabitants of the comarca of Curitiba to the Imperial government. The request also included data on the region's production, population and its borders. Its goal was to assist the evaluation of the necessity of the elevation of the comarca of Curitiba to the status of province.{{Cite journal |last=Gregório |first=Vitor Marcos |date=2015 |title=A emancipação negociada: os debates sobre a criação da província do Paraná e o sistema representativo imperial, 1843 |url=https://www.scielo.br/j/rbh/a/nCRFGdQPKsxW8bRxGzNcf4p/?lang=pt |journal=Revista Brasileira de História |language=pt |volume=35 |pages=319–341 |doi=10.1590/1806-93472015v35n69015 |issn=0102-0188|doi-access=free }}
Due to the province's lack of manpower to work on food supply, the provincial government soon began to promote immigration. On 21 March 1855 the local government sanctioned Law No. 29, promoting immigration from various nationalities.{{Cite journal |last=Oliveira |first=Maria Cecília Marins de |date=1986 |title=Os imigrantes e o ensino na provincia do Paraná |url=https://www.scielo.br/j/er/a/3V8tZL5d7w7n64gnwcs3ZJf/?lang=pt |journal=Educar em Revista |language=pt |pages=51–79 |doi=10.1590/0104-4060.058 |issn=0104-4060|doi-access=free }}
