Participatory sensing
Participatory sensing is the concept of communities (or other groups of people) contributing sensory information to form a body of knowledge.[https://web.archive.org/web/20111218083259/http://www.wilsoncenter.org/sites/default/files/participatory_sensing.pdf wilsoncenter.org]
Description
A growth in mobile devices, for example smartphones, tablet computers or activity trackers, which have multiple sensors, has made participatory sensing viable in the large-scale. Participatory sensing can be used to retrieve information about the environment, weather, noise pollution,{{cite journal |last1=Rana |first1=Rajib |last2=Chou |first2=Chun-tung |last3=Bulusu |first3=Nirupama |last4=Kanhere |first4=Salil |last5=Hu |first5=Wen |title=Ear-Phone: A Context-Aware Noise Mapping Using Smart Phones |journal= Pervasive and Mobile Computing|year=2015 |volume=17 |issue=A |pages=1–22 |doi=10.1016/j.pmcj.2014.02.001 |arxiv=1310.4270 |s2cid=2029253 |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1574119214000273}} urban mobility,{{cite conference |author1=Xiao-Feng Xie |author2=Zun-Jing Wang. |name-list-style=amp |url=http://www.wiomax.com/team/xie/paper/TRB15LBSN.pdf |title=An empirical study of combining participatory and physical sensing to better understand and improve urban mobility networks. |book-title= Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting | location= Washington, DC, USA |year=2015}} congestion as well as any other sensory information that collectively forms knowledge.
Such open communication systems could pose challenges to the veracity of transmitted information.
