Pasto is a poorly attested Barbacoan language that was spoken by Indigenous people of Pasto, Colombia and Carchi Province, Ecuador. It is now extinct.
ISO issue
Prior to its retirement,{{cite web|title=Request Number 2019-019 for Change to ISO 639-3 Language Code|url=https://iso639-3.sil.org/sites/iso639-3/files/change_requests/2019/2019-019.pdf|publisher=SIL International|date=2019-03-04|accessdate=2020-02-05}} the ISO name of the ISO code [bpb] was Barbacoas, the name of an extinct people who gave their name to the Barbacoan language family of which Pasto is a member, as well as to the Colombian town of Barbacoas. However, nothing is known of their language, one of several also known as Colima,{{cite book |last=Loukotka |first=Čestmír |authorlink=Čestmír Loukotka |title=Classification of South American Indian languages |page=247 |url=https://archive.org/details/classificationof0007louk |url-access=registration |publisher=UCLA Latin American Center |year=1968 |location=Los Angeles}} and it can only be assumed to be part of the Barbacoan family.{{cite book |last=Campbell |first=Lyle |authorlink=Lyle Campbell |editor1-last=Grondona |editor1-first=Verónica |editor2-last=Campbell |editor2-first=Lyle |date=2012|title=The Indigenous Languages of South America |chapter=Classification of the Indigenous languages of South America |series=The World of Linguistics |volume=2 |location=Berlin |publisher=De Gruyter Mouton |page=78 |isbn=9783110255133}} Such unattested, long-extinct languages are not normally assigned ISO codes. MultiTree conflates Barbacoas with neighboring Pasto, which is attested sufficiently for classification and assignment of an ISO code. This does not, however, mean that the retired ISO code [bpb] can be properly used for the Pasto language.
Glottolog distinguishes unclassifiable [past1243] 'Pasto' from unattested [barb1242] 'Barbacoas'.
