Career
Farrell has been Head of Marketing and Communications and General Manager retail operations at EBS Building Society, Chief Executive at Galway's Galvia Private Hospital and General Manager at Sligo Regional Hospital. He is Chairman of Sightsavers{{Cite web|url=http://www.sightsavers.ie/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Annual_Review-2014_Ireland.pdf|title=Sightsavers Annual Review 2014|date=2014|website=Sightsavers|access-date=25 May 2016}} International (Ireland) and is a board member of FOLD Ireland.

Political office
Farrell was General Secretary of Fianna Fáil between 1991 and 1997.
