Early life and education
The son of André Laugier, a chemist (1 August 1770 – 9 April 1832), studied astronomy under François Arago.
Career
He then obtained a post in the observatory at Paris, made important discoveries in regard to magnetism, comets, eclipses, meteors, and sunspots, and made improvements in astronomical clocks. Laugier determined the exact latitude of the Paris observatory (1853), correcting previous errors. He published a catalogue of fifty-three nebulae, and another (1857) of the declination of 140 stars, and contributed astronomical papers to the Connaissance du Temps. He was long associated with Arago in researches on terrestrial physics,{{cite journal|title=Laugier, Paul Auguste Ernest|journal=The American Cyclopædia|year=1881|volume=10|page=207|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Az07AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA207|last1=Ripley|first1=George|last2=Dana|first2=Charles Anderson}} The obituary by Rayet indicates the correct name is "Paul Auguste Ernest Laugier". and was for some years president of the Academy of Sciences.[http://www.academie-sciences.fr/academie/membre/liste_president.htm Laugier (Ernest), Présidents de l'Académie des sciences] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141112092133/http://www.academie-sciences.fr/academie/membre/liste_president.htm |date=2014-11-12 }}
