Paul Edmonds, is an American recognized as the oldest individual to achieve remission from both HIV and leukemia. He is known as the "City of Hope Patient" from the hospital where he underwent treatment in Duarte, California. Diagnosed with HIV in 1988 at the age of 33, Edmonds spent over three decades living with the virus until 2018, when he faced a new challenge—a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome, evolving into acute myelogenous leukemia. His journey to recovery, culminating in a stem cell transplant in 2019, at age 63, involved a donor with a rare genetic mutation (homozygous CCR5 Delta 32) resistant to most HIV strains. Edmonds ceased his HIV treatment in March 2021, with subsequent tests revealing no evidence of HIV in his body.{{Cite news |date=2023-04-03 |title=After decades under a virus's shadow, he now lives free of HIV |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2023/04/03/hiv-remission-blood-stem-cell-transplant/ |access-date=2024-02-15 |newspaper=Washington Post |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=2024-02-15 |title=Paul Edmonds, 5th person apparently cured of HIV, steps forward to share his story - ABC News |website=ABC News |url=https://abcnews.go.com/Health/paul-edmonds-5th-person-apparently-cured-hiv-steps/story?id=98208206 |access-date=2024-02-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240215192323/https://abcnews.go.com/Health/paul-edmonds-5th-person-apparently-cured-hiv-steps/story?id=98208206 |archive-date=2024-02-15 }}{{Cite web |date=2024-02-15 |title=HIV in remission: California man Paul Edmonds 1 of 5 patients cured |website=USA Today |url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/04/30/paul-edmonds-city-of-hope-patient-hiv-remission-cure/11762539002/ |access-date=2024-02-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240215192644/https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/04/30/paul-edmonds-city-of-hope-patient-hiv-remission-cure/11762539002/ |archive-date=2024-02-15 }}{{Cite web |date=2024-02-15 |title=City of Hope Research Featuring the Successful Treatment of the Oldest Patient to Achieve Remission for Leukemia and HIV Published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) |url=https://finance.yahoo.com/news/city-hope-research-featuring-successful-223800140.html |access-date=2024-02-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240215203837/https://finance.yahoo.com/news/city-hope-research-featuring-successful-223800140.html |archive-date=2024-02-15 }}{{Cite journal |last1=Dickter |first1=Jana K. |last2=Aribi |first2=Ahmed |last3=Cardoso |first3=Angelo A. |last4=Gianella |first4=Sara |last5=Gendzekhadze |first5=Ketevan |last6=Li |first6=Shirley |last7=Feng |first7=Ye |last8=Chaillon |first8=Antoine |last9=Laird |first9=Gregory M. |last10=Browning |first10=Diana L. |last11=Ross |first11=Justine A. |last12=Nanayakkara |first12=Deepa D. |last13=Puing |first13=Alfredo |last14=Stan |first14=Rodica |last15=Lai |first15=Lily L. |date=2024-02-15 |title=HIV-1 Remission after Allogeneic Hematopoietic-Cell Transplantation |journal=New England Journal of Medicine |language=en |volume=390 |issue=7 |pages=669–671 |doi=10.1056/NEJMc2312556 |pmid=38354149 |pmc=10906479 |issn=0028-4793}} Edmonds is among the five known individuals cured of HIV through stem cell transplantation for their blood cancer, alongside the Berlin Patient,{{Cite journal |last=Brown |first=Timothy Ray |date=January 2015 |title=I Am the Berlin Patient: A Personal Reflection |journal=AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses |volume=31 |issue=1 |pages=2–3 |doi=10.1089/aid.2014.0224 |issn=0889-2229 |pmc=4287108 |pmid=25328084}}{{Cite journal |last1=Hütter |first1=Gero |last2=Nowak |first2=Daniel |last3=Mossner |first3=Maximilian |last4=Ganepola |first4=Susanne |last5=Müßig |first5=Arne |last6=Allers |first6=Kristina |last7=Schneider |first7=Thomas |last8=Hofmann |first8=Jörg |last9=Kücherer |first9=Claudia |last10=Blau |first10=Olga |last11=Blau |first11=Igor W. |last12=Hofmann |first12=Wolf K. |last13=Thiel |first13=Eckhard |date=2009-02-12 |title=Long-Term Control of HIV by CCR5 Delta32/Delta32 Stem-Cell Transplantation |url=http://www.nejm.org/doi/abs/10.1056/NEJMoa0802905 |journal=New England Journal of Medicine |language=en |volume=360 |issue=7 |pages=692–698 |doi=10.1056/NEJMoa0802905 |pmid=19213682 |issn=0028-4793}} London Patient,{{Cite journal |last1=Gupta |first1=Ravindra Kumar |last2=Peppa |first2=Dimitra |last3=Hill |first3=Alison L |last4=Gálvez |first4=Cristina |last5=Salgado |first5=Maria |last6=Pace |first6=Matthew |last7=McCoy |first7=Laura E |last8=Griffith |first8=Sarah A |last9=Thornhill |first9=John |last10=Alrubayyi |first10=Aljawharah |last11=Huyveneers |first11=Laura E P |last12=Nastouli |first12=Eleni |last13=Grant |first13=Paul |last14=Edwards |first14=Simon G |last15=Innes |first15=Andrew J |date=May 2020 |title=Evidence for HIV-1 cure after CCR5Δ32/Δ32 allogeneic haemopoietic stem-cell transplantation 30 months post analytical treatment interruption: a case report |url=|journal=The Lancet HIV |volume=7 |issue=5 |pages=e340–e347 |doi=10.1016/s2352-3018(20)30069-2 |issn=2352-3018 |pmc=7606918 |pmid=32169158}} Düsseldorf Patient,{{Cite journal |last1=Jensen |first1=Björn-Erik Ole |last2=Knops |first2=Elena |last3=Cords |first3=Leon |last4=Lübke |first4=Nadine |last5=Salgado |first5=Maria |last6=Busman-Sahay |first6=Kathleen |last7=Estes |first7=Jacob D. |last8=Huyveneers |first8=Laura E.
